Choking on saliva while sleeping

Hi everybody.

I have been concerned about this. The other day and many other times but not often I have choked on saliva while sleeping. My brother and my mom has the same problem. Dad, mom, my brother and me also choke with food while eating. I thought it was normal because it always happens at home. Then I told my dear about what has happened to me the day before and he told me he has never heard about something like that before. He said that maybe it is a serious problem or something hereditary. So my question is... Is this common for you, have you ever experienced something as I have?, If not, do you think is normal?
