So I've come across several mentions of cold showers on this forum and am becoming more intrigued. I saw this TED video:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gb0h8ZKvJW4

I did a search here and found more threads than I was expecting on the subject. There are mentions of having cold showers from 1 month to 4-5 years and many descriptions of the protean benefits, but there seems to be a lot of variability in terms of the temperature used, the climate, etc.

So for those of you who take regular cold showers:

    1. How long have you been doing it?
    2. What temperature is it inside where you live (in celsius)?
    3. Do you start out warm or hot and switch it to cold by the end, is the entire shower cold, or do you alternate hot/cold?
    4. Is the water cool or cold?
    5. For those of you who have cold winters: during the winter do you use cool water? If the water is the actual temperature outside then I'm guessing it's not possible to use ice-cold water because you are going to be shivering/freezing and maybe there are going to be health problems.
    6. What is the flow on your showerhead? I have one that is rated as less than 5 litres/minute, which is very low flow. I don't know if this is a detriment or a benefit. I am thinking of getting one that is 7.5 litres/minute (still low flow) which would give a much nicer hot shower but I don't know how it would affect a cold one.

Edit: read that a standard showerhead is 15-25 litres/minute

I have only tried this a few times. Initially I tried ice-cold but my feet got numb and I didn't think it was healthy. After that I started the shower on warm/hot and without getting in, would keep decreasing the temperature until I couldn't feel any heat (cool), turn it a bit lower so that it was in the cold range, and then get in. My showers were still the shortest I've had in my life, and I was definitely invigorated. But I wasn't hyperventilating as others have described, and it was okay to get my head under the water. The temperature inside during the winter is 20 degrees celsius. I've just done one in the last few weeks and definitely was missing it right after I stopped doing it.

    Hello Stygian,

    1. I have been doing it since March 5th, 2014.
    2. 31.6 Celsius
    3. The shower I take are 100% cold the entire time.
    4. The water is the coldest it can get.
    5. I live in Southern California. If I did have cold winters, I suppose I would just do nothing hotter then warm.
    6. Mine is a fast flowing one.

    I hope this helped you,

Woah! Why in the hell are you living in the temperature of hell? I have 19.3 celsius inside my house and I like it, even though I have yet diagnosed, but un-medicated hypothyroidism, which makes my body temperature lower than most people have, it's 35.5 celsius. So I start to shiver already in lower than 15 celsius.

    My answers:

    1. 2 weeks
    2. 19.3 celsius
    3. I go from warm to cold gradually
    4. So cold it hurts
    5. I haven't taken cold showers in winter, but I probably would be using warm water to make myself comfortable, especially when coming inside to the house
    6. I don't know how many litres per minute my flow is, but the flow is pretty fast, since it can hurt your glans penis, if you aim at it directly

I don't think he has a choice, I think the 31.6 degrees is the ambient temperature there.

Lol, I'm not allowed to discuss more than one idea in the same thread? Wanted to collect experiences of cold showers, you can see that the two that posted already do them very differently.

your allowed everything you want as far as im concerned dear friend :)
its just that the way i interpreted the TED talk he told about not giving into your negative thoughts and as a reminder to not walk the beaten path.
Its not like its a medical thing, like the cold water gonna change something in your body or something. so how much water comes out of your shower and how cold it really is doesnt really matter according to Joel Runyon

    My answers:

    1) more or less 3 months
    2) 18 degrees Celsius
    3) Only cold water
    4) Around 3-4 degrees I guess (the water comes from a frozen lake)
    5) I live close to the polar circle, and used cold water this winter. You have 15minutes before your body fall asleep in ice-cold water, enough for a shower of 5 minutes!
    6) Don't know... I would say "standard" flow

If you have problems of hyperventilation, try to bath in a frozen lake 2-3 times (in 1 or 2 week(s)). Enter gradually in the water while breathing deeply and slowly. No need to stay long in the water; once your shoulders are in, get off the water gradually, still breathing slowly.
Just one thing: keep your head out of the water!

Soon you won't be able to take warm showers anymore!

    Enjoy!

    1. Since april 2014(you can say 2 months when we hit june)
    2. It starts from 16(morning)to 20-23(noon-midday) to again 18-16(evening)
    3. I start taking hot shower, clean my body, and my last 2-2.5 minutes of shower is damn cold.
    4. Coldest
    5. Well,i didn't tried it yet, but some mornings were little windy, you may shiver at the morning, but i ended my showers cold nevertheless and you may shiver time to time after shower.but i don't know what may happen at winter.
    6. I don't know about that.

You should make cold showers as your routine. it helps you be awake at morning, and makes your body tight, your dick also gets it's lesson if it craves for porn, masturbation etc. :)

My first cold shower I started at warm, and gradually turned it down until it was freezing cold. Every day since then I keep it at freezing cold. It was really really tough the first 3-4 days, but every day since then it's gotten a little bit easier every time.

Best advice, go head first into a freezing cold shower.
