In this thread I would like to talk specifically about Facebook. Why? because there are many other sites that fall under the category of Social Media but I personally use it so that's the reason. See just started this thread to discuss not to judge anyone or imply anything to anyone.

Now in recent times you may have or haven't seen that there are some people who are of the opinion that social media is harming us. As mentioned above there are may sites that fall under the category of the term social media but why I choose Facebook as I can easily relate to this. Another thing among these sites facebook is getting mentioned heavily. The reasons cited behind usage of facebook are that it makes un social in the real world, it often lowers self esteem by looking upon others, it makes relationships monotonous and mechanical, it kills our productive time, etc. In this some are of the opinion that it doesn't harm us as it connects us, platform like this can be used to spread awareness, etc. In my case I am still trying to figure because yes for me sometimes it creates lower self esteem or kill time but at the same time I am able to connect with some of my school mates through this. So I am in the cross road.

You can post your views here in with other information that you have found elsewhere. As aforesaid started this thread to get a idea along with opinions of yours. There is also a poll if you intend or want to vote.

  2. I've never joined or been a part Facebook but from what I see it looks like a time waster. NoFap is my social media site where I truly help and support others and they do the same for me.

There is so many bad things about social media, specifically Facebook I've thought of.

I've found Facebook hasn't helped me connect with old friends or acquaintances, they add you but don't say anything, and ignore your messages. A lot of the your just being collected as a number to boost their friend count. Facebook friends are fake.

It feels unnatural, some person I haven't seen in 2 years, I know there having a child and knows what it looks like. This is information I don't need to know. Its a waste of my time.

Again, with connecting with friends. This gives people a sense of false options, they are wasting their time communicating on someone who there never gonna see, so they forget spending that time on their real friends. You can have a lot of friends in life, by diluting the quality of your friendships or have a few friendships with high quality. Its your choice.

It makes you feel like your missing out and can make you depressed.

Its narcissistic, when you post a status like "I just got a job, or went vacation here", who the hell are you actually talking to? Its like your posting something for everybody to see like a your celebrity. This is something you should enjoy to call up your actually friends and let them know.

It make its harder to get over and move on from a relationship, because you wanna keep checking their Facebook. Then you might see them someone new then feel extreme emotions like jealously and depression, rage etc

Woman are using it to boost their ego beyond normalcy, they post a selfie, then get like 100 likes. I think that makes it harder to a for man to get a woman who has their head messed up with social media.

It ruins conversations. Because when see your friend in real life you have nothing to talk about because you already seen on it facebook.

It removes mystery from you, rather then a person having to get to know you, they go stalk your Facebook and find out stuff. Thats a bad thing too, specially for dating. Mystery is important.

  7. Like anything there's good and bad. And that also varies from person to person. I mainly use fb to keep up with my favorite bands, talk music, and to keep up with long distance family. The only detriment to me personally is the temptation of checking out this attractive girl that so and so just befriended, which I've gotten good at resisting.

Thanks. Mystery is important, in some ways Facebook could sabotage you. A woman might view your profile and judge you right there without actually going on a couple dates with you.

I think the main danger is how much time it wastes. For most of the people I know it is now a very instinctual reaction to open Facebook on their phone whenever they are board. Wake up in the morning: automatically open Facebook. Standing in line: automatically open Facebook, have 10 minutes of spare time: automatically open Facebook. And it can last forever, there is always more new content, you can always scroll further you will never reach the end. I would also do this, I wouldn't even notice that I was doing it until I had already been scrolling through Facebook for a while.

Now I blocked Facebook on my phone. I still have an account because sometimes it can be useful, but now I can't log in instinctively whenever I'm bored. I have to go into settings, put in my password, unblock Facebook, go to safari (I also deleted the app) and go to Facebook. Now I only go onto Facebook when I actually have a reason and I log out whenever I'm done, instead of getting lost in the endless scrolling. I'd say I go into Facebook less than once a week now as opposed to maybe 20 times a day before.

I've been a FB member for 8 years now. When we were kids it was kinda fun to be on a social network. Now I understand that it's just a pure waste of time. I asked myself : Dafuq showing my life to other people can help me to improve myself ? And checking theirs, does it makes me feel better ? Does it helps me being a better person ? Hell no. So I desactivated my fb account. I didn't deleted though because like everything else fb have some good stuffs. Especially staying in contact with your friends and relatives. So right now I use it like 1m every 2-3 days (I reactivate the acount then immediately desactivate it) to stop spending time on it and seriously, I feel a lot better because you don't have to prove anything to anyone anymore. And when I'll feel that I don't need it anymore in my life I'll reactivate it just to stay in touch with relatives.

I'm going to delete mine definitely, I cannot use it in moderation and I can't not log in to it 20 times a day when I have it.

If I just hold on to 1 May when it gets deleted. :')

I'm thinking of deleting mine permanently also.( The delete link is not in settings, only deactivate, you have to go to the help section, which has the delete link)

Then make a new one, but disable everything possible, only keep 1 profile photo and just leave a notice on it that says something like

"Do not add me or msg me here you will get no reply. Here is my phone number xxx xx xxxx . If you know me and trying to find me give me a call / text"

Then be done with it, only log in to change the photo once a year and the phone number if I change it.

So then basically its like a modern phonebook to find me. Like how old friends and family did in the old days before facebook looking up your name in the phonebook to get your number.

For anyone who is wondering how bad Facebook or other social media sites are (not including self-improvement forums), they will seriously mess with your head. To begin with, anyone doing NoFap will come across photos of hot chicks on Facebook which will trigger them, I was obsessed with Facebook for 7 years and I quit 2 months ago, just deleted account and kept messenger working so I can contact friends and I'm far happier and motivated. Used to be depressed all time (probably from people appearing that they have better lives than me which is a misconception). Instead of checking Facebook, I now go through self-improvement forums and actually get things done and just feel generally happier so yeah why would you wanna waste your time seeing what everyone else is up to?

I'm 2 months free from it and I do the reactivating sometimes but then start to scroll and I'm just like "what the fuck am I doing? where's that deactivation button" lol I was madly addicted but since spending 2 months off it I realized just how pathetic it is and like you I feel like I don't have to prove myself to anyone and I feel free whilst all my "Facebook friends" are still hooked and complaining about their day but yet they don't realize it's probably Facebook making them feel shit lol

Well, they'll never go wrong with joining different social media account as long you know your limitations in posting photos and your insights. So much negativity in the internet especially facebook but limit yourself to trust those post because you might the a victim. Reminds always yourself of your privacy. Limitations!

Yes you are right in a way, in moderation many things can be beneficial and not harmful but to reach that moderation many suffer. Another thing you brought up is good that is privacy.
