This last year has been one of the worst in my life. I've been unemployed and struggling. Most of my life I have been ambitious and hard working. Now, I can't seem to find the energy to try.

I need to practice my programing skills, I need to finish my grad school applications, and I need to keep reaching out to companies and recruiters. I wonder if porn and internet use have turned me into someone who can't focus. I know porn contributes to hypofrontally and that pretty well describes my state of mind. I just can't seem to stay focused one a specific task and drive it to completion.

Do you guys have any advice? I use to be involved in exercise and meditation that seemed to help, but I'm struggling to get myself to these activities now days. Should I get on drugs? Would that help me get myself out of this rut?

Stay away from drugs unless they are absolutely medically necessary.
The side effects are often worse than the condition they are meant to treat.

What you need to do is take a break from pmo,
and practice daily meditation (as little as 10 mins a day works for me).
Your mind will become very focused and you won’t be distracted all the time.
Also take a break from any video gaming as that can also make ADD worse.
Get outside and get some exercise instead.

Your brain just needs a break from all the overstimulation.
Let it rest and it will heal itself.

  3. Video gaming is actually good for add, it has been shown in studies that video gaming produces high reward and keeps the add brain focused which can have some lasting effects , what do you think neuro feedback is

  4. Looking for work can be very hard on anyone. To be honest, you can sometimes feel like a useless member of society when you have to seek work. But it's worse if you avoid the problem and do not look for it. So, I am not surprised that you are finding some comfort in porn. But if you can make a really good effort to stop watching it you will benefit. The idea is you need to work on your discipline at a time when it's easy to quit. Do not quit, friend! Avoid the porn. Work hard. Think about the kind of life you want to lead and make yourself one day closer to getting there. One day at a time.

Get back to what helped you before. Looking at porn kills motivation big time and puts you in survival mode and recovery mode where you are still feeling the negative effects of your last relapse. It's hard to get going but if you can get some momentum and keep it, you'll have something good to build on.

You either have ADD/ADHD or you dont. its not something you can develop later in life. Your symptoms can worsen for periods of time though and a weakend mental state or physical condition will make it harder to supress your ADHD. Spending too much time on my computer usually makes my ADHD worse eventually.
Anything you do that increases your dopamine levels in a big way for short amounts of time will likely cause you to have a dopamine imbalance in time and make your ADHD worse (porn, gambling, online gaming, drugs). People that have ADD/ADHD have a natural taste for things that boost your dopamine levels though thats why its so hard to control.
Its possible that medications for ADD/ADHD will only increase your urge for things like porn so therefor i would advise to discuss this with a real doctor/therapist

Thanks for all the advice guys. I am focusing on making small improvements going forward. I have been taking an depressant (SNRI) I think it's helping. I feel motivated to make improvements everyday.

One of the things that is so frustrating for me about being unemployed and unable to find a job is that I was very good at my last Job. I was one of my previous employers up and coming engineers and I was rated in the top 5% of engineers for my pay grade at my yearly evaluation. The department manager (of about 140 people) asked me to have monthly meetings with him bc he said I was "on his special list". I was asked to work on the companies most important projects. Specifically the projects that we were competing with other companies on to win a contract.

Now I can't even find a job. WTF. I guess it's because I don't have an advanced degree, I've been out of work too long, or because I'm a white male. Anyway planing to go back to grad school soon. Just really frustrating. Not only am I suffering personally, but I feel like society is wasting my talent.

Do whatever works for you but I personally tried some depression pills and ADHD drugs that never worked for me in my past. I think all of these drugs can be harmful like porn. For example when I was on Ritalin, it was giving me some dopamine rush like porn especially the first times, I am addicted for years but drugs gave me more sleep related problems and more troubles. And I tried to find some informations about these psychiatric drugs and I found this book: https://www.amazon.com/Myth-Chemical-Cure-Psychiatric-Treatment/dp/0230574327

I can relate mostly with myself. A lot of guys in this forums are just talking about their erectile dysfunctions, their sex related problems, their dick hardness, spontaneous erections etc. But I discovered I have a problem years ago when I had lack of concentration, loss of ambition, starting to see anxiety, beginning to see low grades, self-esteem problems and moreover. We are talking about the 'porn addiction itself' but this is actually an arousal addiction, which gives us a 'dopamine high'. And it reduces it receptors by using porn a lot, years and years and lead to an addiction. When it comes to porn, there is no 'active substance' for it. Do you ever wondered why when we in front of the screen while porn playing we overfocus to it, we lock to it? Because it leads to a dopamine rush.

I am a Math and Computer Science student, too and when I have this 'porn reality', everytime I have a trouble with my memory. With this brain fog I can't focus any task nor I can reach my projects and works. I know, you have to learn a lot in this area and you have to apply something to it. But everytime I had a successful reboot, I have better aspects every area of life. I was on this addiction relapse cycle too many years and I found there is just one way out. Quitting porn forever. With physically, emotionally and mentally. And when you do this, if you do something right, your brain punishes you, I am talking about withdrawals. And it can be suck. Maybe it seems like your concentration was better while using porn. No, your brain feels like it. If you have addiction related brain changes, actually porn created this 'need', this mentality.

I don't know what is your past experience either what is your life look like but you should know you are not alone. All of us here want to take control back. I hope it helps and you can control over your life.
