Hello guys, I am new here, been off the PMO for 16 days, still going and all is fine.

Now be advised, I would like to discuss the science behind all of the NoFap. If you are prone to relapses, I guess it is better you abstain from reading or contributing to this post. I really like discussing ideas and I think PIED is worth doing so. Now I can't include links to anything since I recently joined, if you guys wanna read them, send me a msg or google it :) .

So everything I've read a lot of posts and articles on NoFap and affiliated sites so far concerning how terrible porn can be. It affects our reward patterns in our brain and creates desensitization to arousal both by view or by touch. It also messes up a lot of people self-esteem and can lead (or at least partially contribute to) depression. I've experienced a few of those symptoms during my life, now being a young man, but I just didn't get how porn could do ALL of this by it's own considering how many people use it. So I went a little further in my researchs.

I found an article by David Ley. Now the title (An erectile dysfunction myth) doesn't really reflect what I find interesting in this. Most of his article is based on deconstructing the "myth" of blaming Porn for every problem with sex men can have today. However, he points out that NoFap's community is still contributing at helping people struggling with those problems by giving a place where men and women can talk freely about it, helping the stress-induced problems. But here comes the fun part.

What I found the most interesting is the two studies at the end of the article. David Ley explains his own conclusions upon reading them (that I don't agree with, even though I also read the studies). Both studies suggest that viewing sexual images (they call them VSS) don't cause PIED or any other symptoms by itself, it's more the fact that a normal sexual encounter does not correspond to it afterwards. The breadth (deviant level) is not the same as what you can be used to after years of porn usage, thus begins the problems.
Also, the lack of any source of stress in front of a video is to be noted. Afterwards, when you engage in intimate contact, anxiety can rise up fast and destroy any chances for an erection or even plain arousal (I feel like this might personally be the core of my problem).

So, according to all this, even though avoiding P and then MO might not be the key to every problem in life (like I read on some forum posts), it might still be a good, simple way to take back control of our sexual life.

    Any thoughts ?
