As I try to come to terms with my addiction, I have found that watching documentaries about the porn industry has been a big help. In the past two nights I have watched the Netflix documentary Hot Girls Wanted and an episode from the follow-up series. By seeing what a harsh and often brutal experience porn can be for the girls taking part, it has definitely lessened my desire to relapse. Like those of us who are trapped by addiction, these girls often find themselves trapped in a job they despise, haunted by self doubt but not brave enough to step out of the harmful environment.
By seeing what the lives of most girls in porn is like off screen, it definitely makes watching porn far less appealing.
The episode I watched tonight was particularly helpful as it focused on an cam girl, something I have become addicted to recently. It examines this American girl's relationship with a porn addict from Australia, who has been watching her for 4 years, spending thousands of dollars in the process.
Despite having a husband who loves her and tolerates her work, the girl is persuaded to take a trip to Australia to meet this guy. Nothing sexual occurs during her trip and meeting her in person shatters the fantasy that has been building up in this guy's head for years. It all ends amicably with both the cam girl and the guy realising they have been harming each other with their intense on-line relationship.
Having grown close to one particular camgirl myself over the last two months, I was in danger of falling into the same fantasy. I had the wisdom to sever my ties and join NoFap but I know how close I came to falling into the same trap.
Watching these documentaries have been a big help in banishing any thoughts of a relapse as they help me to understand the seedy, brutal and impersonal reality of porn, shattering the fantasy.
I was wondering if any other people here have had a similar experience from watching documentaries about the adult industry or if you actually think they are harmful as they remind of you porn and can trigger a relapse? Would be interesting to hear what others think...

  2. As I was reading your post I was just thinking to myself “how the hell did he get through that without relapsing?”

Im almost positive I wouldn’t be able to get through a episode or documentary without relapsing or driving myself crazy. It does sound like a interesting show and I would like to see it...but I just can’t take the risk right now.

I would like to watch it as well, but my urges are nuts these last couple of days, I'll put it on hold for now

Yes, I was interested to see if some folk would view it that way. There were only a few urges, right at the start of the programme, but they passed quickly and the documentary really helped with my overall mindset. I suppose it depends on how well the documentary is made. If it's flippant and sensationalist, then it probably won't help. But if it's made well and explores the damage done by porn then it can be really beneficial. The two I watched fell firmly into this camp.
I've found that treating my addiction almost academically is helping a lot, reading up on it and educating myself about it so I can understand why I lapsed so many times before

Hope you can keep the urges at bay. The documentaries are well worth watching. Maybe you can view them with headphones on in a public place like a cafe or library so you can't act on the urges. If you don't think you can do that, I definitely recommend reading lots of articles about porn addiction. Finding out the medical and emotional reasons behind our addiction is a big help in trying to combat it
