  1. Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I would love to hear your thoughts on the role that music should play in the lives of believers today.

It's undoubtedly true that music can have a massive impact on our thoughts and feelings; it can be used to excite, calm and even worship. If that is true, how selective should we be when deciding what to listen to? Does it matter whether the lyrics are explicit, or inappropriate? Are some genres off-limits all together? Should we only listen to psalms, hymns and spiritual songs? Do you think the Devil could be attacking people through music today?

    What do you listen to?

In my opinion we should be very guarded in this respect; music and music videos are full of temptation to sin (especially sexually) and often do very little in the way of honouring God. My flesh certainly likes some of the stuff I hear on the radio, and that's enough to send alarm bells ringing any day! I personally try to only listen to songs written to worship.

If we all know how destructive pornography can be, is there any relationship between explicit images and explicit music?

Interestingly, many people believe that Satan may have been in charge of music before the fall, as hinted to in Ezekiel 28:13 of the KJV. Though I’m not saying for one second that this is necessarily an accurate interpretation, imagine if it were true: what if Satan is using his former experience to lead people astray today through music?

What do you think? Let me know below!

  2. I wrote any music that is written to honour God but at the same time, if the music does not directly disrespect no God, I want to listen to it but I know I should listen to music that honours God. For example I've been struggling with wanting to listen to Michael Jackson's "The Man in the Mirror" but I know that I shouldn't because Michael Jackson was not a Christian.

  3. Yes I do think so.

  4. Amen brother, anyone the world calls a "King", even the "King of Pop" is probably not going to bring us any nearer to God. There's only one true King, and that's Jesus!

  5. Yes, the flesh does like some of the music being released these days, in my case as well. Ever since about December 2016, I've been trying to get closer to God and develop a relationship with Him cause even though I used to go to church I never used to take it seriously. I used to listen to a lot of worldly music but now as a young Christian since I've gotten a new phone in March, I've been listening to gospel and contemporary Christian music with the only exception being BJ Thomas's Raindrops Keep Falling on my head, (though I think he's a Christian). I do struggle though with worldly music and seeing young people in school and stuff listen to it makes me feel like I'm missing out but when I do listen to my Christian music, I'm reminded that I'm not.
Edit: I also listen to Owl City's Fireflies

  6. I used to think that listening to worship music would be boring ad stuff but some songs are really great eg. In Christ Alone.

  7. Amen to that, well done on working towards making a real change for God Brother. I think what you say about feeling like you're missing out is true of ALL sin. The devil tricks us into thinking it is good and harmless when really, nobody ever was better off from sinning, just further away from God. Stay strong Brother.

  8. I turned on radio the day before yesterday back on for first time in months. I am not Christian myself but lemme tell ya, Satan does write some catchy beats. Reminded me of why I stopped listening to it to begin with.

But at least some good did came out of it, I found this song, it's probably gonna be my favorite one of the 2017. Doesn't seem like Devil's work to me:

Ya know what music is? A noise. A pleasant noise. And I am not saying that we should never listen to music. There is right time and place for everything. But I think there is something magical in silence. And music is the opposite of silence.

“In the silence of the heart God speaks. If you face God in prayer and silence, God will speak to you. Then you will know that you are nothing. It is only when you realize your nothingness, your emptiness, that God can fill you with Himself. Souls of prayer are souls of great silence.” - Mother Teresa

    Peace. :emoji_v:

  10. Even something like listening to worldly music which people don't see as a major sin but the type of music you listen to would influence to either sin or not sin.

  11. Ain't that the truth man!

And you're right, that song doesn't seem too bad at all. Robbie Williams actually has many wonderful songs, and although I'm not a fan (I once had a boss who was obsessed, cardboard cut-outs and everything) he does seem to have flirted with religion in the past. Maybe he's saved, I hope so! The scary thing is that many artists, even mainstream ones, will have a few good, even God honouring songs - that can lead you to believing they are on God's side when really they later go on to spout false doctrine and the like. Even contemporary "christian" artists can at times be dangerous. I don't know if they have good intentions or not, but they sure as goodness aren't 100% safe.

Sure are right on the mark there too buddy, there is no substitute for silence. In fact, the bible says in Psalm 46:10 "Be still, and know that I am God". There's certainly a time and a place for both. Thanks for sharing.

  12. This is so true.

  13. How do I know which artists to listen to?

  14. That's a good question Brother, and I'm no teacher. The best answer I can think to give is to keep your nose in that Bible, know your doctrine and the truths of the faith like the back of your hand. Then test what these songs say... if they do not mach up with God's word - they are wrong! If all else fails, remember Philippians 4:8 "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

  15. Good point Brother. I think that music is used by the devil to break our resistance to Satan down. Remember Daniel 3:5 "That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up: And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace." (My bold)

Maybe all those who bowed would have not done so if it weren't for that music? The music was obviously made for a reason, maybe this was why. It sure took a lot of faith for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to not bow down! Let us be like like them with God's help.

  16. In addition, what you say is absolutely right, I don't think that music that does not directly dishonour God is a sin in itself; after all, Mark 7:15 says "There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man".

  18. @Solargold do you think my taking my faith seriously has to do with God pouring out His Spirit in the last days?

  19. Why would I listen to someone who's not Christian?

  20. You are entitled to your opinion; Just know that you don't know everything - regardless of age or experience. If you really are such a young man, I suggest you keep that thought in the front of your mind. It can move backwards as you get older. I hope you come to know Jesus, if you don't already. Have a blessed day.
