Excercise-based dilemma I need perspectives on!

Basically, the gym I go to has televisions right in front of the treadmills. I noticed myself becoming entrenched in an episode of Law and Order, which meant I was focusing very much on reading the sub-titles. I tried to look away from it, but dammit, I was hooked on the episode.

What do you think? Could the TV's be a nice distraction from the pain of excercising? Or does it hinder my progress in the sense that I should be getting comfortable with the pain?

I too go to the gym. I get on the elliptical and they have TV's attached to them. I use to bring my head phones to listen to the News, Today show, sports, game shows, etc. Not so much any more. Some people bring tablets and read a book. I couldn't do that. Over all it depends on what type of work out you want when you go to the gym. I can be pretty spaced out on the elliptical and still burn some good calories but if I'm trying to do sprints then I need to be more focused on what I'm doing and how I'm breathing. I'm working toward the treadmill but the elliptical is much nicer on my knees.

It's nice to go to the gym and work out but I wouldn't put to much presser on it. Read, Brain Hacks for Quitting Porn by Mark Queppet. He has some helpful thoughts around exercise and stopping pmo. It's only about 17 pages if you haven't read it already. Overall when I go to the gym I just try to find what feels good. I'm not going to be the strongest, fastest, or even pick up a girl. It's actual a very isolating place to go. Not many people talk at the gym I go too. Everyone is focus on their work out. Unless one gets a personal trainer than you have a paid best friend to help.

    Anyway that's my 2 cents.

You can also turn off the tv on the elliptical machine, that's what I do. Also, you can always close your eyes and zone out on the music that you are listening too. Furthermore, by doing that, you won't be looking at the women at the gym with sexual thoughts running through your mind.

  4. If you were training for the purposes of muscle building (i.e. doing free weight exercises etc) then I would say the TV could be detrimental because you might not be focused enough on getting good form with each rep. For cardio like a running machine though I can't see it being a problem - if it allows you to run for longer because of the distraction then it could even be beneficial, so go for it. :)
