Female bashing

There seems to be a very disturbing trend lately of posts that exist only to bash on women everywhere. I'm really interested in hearing what the moderators have to say about it. Free speech is free speech, but where's the line when it crosses into hate speech?

...I fully expect this post to be riddled with comments similar to those other posts, but I guess we'll see.

Can you post or email some examples? The rules are very clear that this would be against the rules. Maybe it is time to bring on some more moderators to help us handle the load.

I reported one already - there's a very offensive post in the 'off topics' forum labeled 'The state of females'. There should be no place here for kind of discourse here. Thank you so much for responding!

    >bash on women
(︶︹︺) , people who bash women keep forgetting if it wasnt for women none of them(and everyone else) would be in this world.

The problem is not the number of moderators, (although we have lost Anne-Dauphine since a few months ago)- but that these problematic posts, more often than not are not being reported. If you have a problem with a post, please report it, so that a moderator can review it. We're busy people, and often don't have time to trawl through hoards of posts checking for compliance. @[email protected] , thank you for reporting that offensive post last Friday. I also saw a complaint by the user that posted that thread after it was deleted. I fashioned a response to him, however I lost power before I was able to post. By the time our power came back on, the thread had already been deleted by another moderator.

As far as these trends go, there is some misogyny on the forum. There always has been, and due to the nature of what we're dealing with here (recovering porn addicts who likely have an unfairly skewed perception of sex and the opposite sex), I think it's inevitable that a certain level of misogyny will continue to be spread here. It comes in peaks and troughs, but luckily the spread is relatively limited a distinct few users here. Misogynistic (or misandrous) posts are against the rules, so again, please report a post if you feel offended by it.

I agree with NoBrainer. Misogynous posts are against the rules, and I immediately take down any examples that come to my attention. But we rely on people to report such posts, and it seems that sometimes they aren't being reported. Your report about that offensive post last Friday was the first I'd heard of it, @[email protected]. I immediately took it down, but, again, response time was limited to when it was reported and when I logged on to check the reports. I was happy to see that the other comments in that thread were positive, unlike the OP.

If we are going to bring on some new moderators, I think it'd be helpful if one (or more) of them was a woman. Right now the moderation teams feels like a bit of a men's club. And that's fine. But forum experience is different for women than for men, obviously. Women have to deal with curiosity from men about their porn addictions, as well as misogyny and a penchant for blaming them for their porn-addicted SO's problem in Relationships. I think having a woman on the mod team would help us deal with these issues in a more constructive manner. Just my 2 cents.

If one's source of information about women is porn, no wonder that he has such a low opinion on them.

Significant Other. A short hand and gender neutral way to say boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife, partner/partner, etc

Yes that's a good point. Personally, I don't think we need more than one more moderator. Our decisions are in-cohesive enough as it is.

I get what you're saying Dev, and personally I'm not a fan of censorship. However, speaking for this forum and the way it is run- I believe we do have to crack down on issues such as this- and if it comes to deleting posts, then so be it. It is rare that someone is banned for something like this. Rather the user is given a warning, which gives moderators a log of the offence. Permanent bans are only issued to users with repeated offences (I personally work on a '3 strikes you're out' system). Additionally, we support user's right to their opinion and freedom of speech. However, a post written by them has to be written constructively. If a user can sensibly and constructively state their view point, then I see no problem with their post. It is simply a way to invoke discussion on the subject. However, it is the blatantly offensive and nonconstructive posts which seek to humiliate specific demographics of users (or individuals) on this forum that cannot be tolerated. Such posts serve no purpose on what is supposed to be a supportive environment and will therefore be removed.

I agree, NoBrainer, and I am pleased you mentioned misandry as I have seen examples of this, too.
I disagree @TheUnnasumingMammothrept. That would be the same as needing someone gay to deal with homophobia in a more constructive manner. But one gay man does not speak for and represent all others. Similarly, a female moderator would not speak for and represent all women. I think the current team are able to deal with the various issues that arise.
