Forget about guilt and shame...

Discussion in 'Porn Addiction' started by mattstronaut, Mar 2, 2015.

  1. Many times I have tried nofap, I once made it to 90 days and on making it thought all was well and started again. Since then I have used it on and off many times, I relapsed earlier today. What has occurred to me is how guilty and shit I feel about myself since relapsing after the 90 day stage. Whilst science and chemical imbalances can explain this, we ultimately make the choice to put our minds to certain thought patterns, whether it be anxiety, depression, guilt, shame etc.

The Dalai Lama in 'The Art of Happiness' talked to a bunch of University medical students that claimed that thoughts and feelings were the result of different chemical reactions and changes in the brain. He then raised the question: Is it possible to conceive the reverse sequence, where the thoughts give rise to the chemical events in the brain? What I noticed about my previous 90 day streak is that once I got over the guilt etc. associated with pmo, it became much easier... I went 30 days earlier in the year but felt like I was making no progress as my thought patterns remained the same. To complete nofap, whilst it is useful to associate negativity with pmo don't let it drag you down and feel guilty about past actions - this could lead to a relapse as it takes your mind off the negativity (only to feel bad again after)...

Check out this video where Jacque Fresco talks about the 'self'. I hope that once I stop focusing on my'self' again, this will become much easier, maybe this could help you too...

    great post MJJ520
Guilt is a simple but VERY powerful feeling to overcome. Years of intense guilt almost destroyed me when i was younger(i mean literally) so i know how it works. Funny enough a quote by Alastair Crowley (the famous Satanist and NOT a christian resource - hmmm wonder why?) about the ridiculous absolute absurdity of guilt is what helped me snap out of it (cant remember the quote word for word now). and no im not a satanist ;)

I'd also like to add that meditation it a great tool for reducing guilt. It 'deprogrammes' us from many of the thoughts and thinking patterns weve learnt from family and society and allows us to see outselves as we are. with all our imperfections and perhaps a desire to improve ourselves but importantly we can drop guilt as it doesnt serve us any more than carrying a large boulder around serves us.
