Until earlier today my avatar was a work by 19th-century artist Flandrin entitled Young Male Nude Seated beside the Sea—until earlier today because a member angrily directed me to remove it. Because there are probably many people on this site who'd have responded similarly, I've pulled down the avatar.

Candidly, it's sad that too many of us can't distinguish simple nudity from provocative nakedness. I suppose the same confusion and conflation lead some to view Michelangelo's David and Botticelli's Birth of Venus as pornographic. Further testimony to the damage (whether to our brains or to our psyches) that pornography has caused how we perceive ourselves and other human beings!

Most people who respect art can distinguish between pornography and nudity in paintings. The problem is, once we get into the reboot, our brains become highly sensitised. Our reward centres crave the dopamine 'high', and will do anything to get it. This causes even the tiniest impulse to become a trigger. I for one have great admiration for good works of art, but even I experienced a small rush while I was at a museum last week!

I suppose it is indirectly an effect of porn, but this is mainly due to the dopamine deficiency we create in our brains when we reboot.

The member in question later clarified:

"Oh come on! I am sure there are plenty of alcoholics that can appreciate fine wines, but they are still alcoholic - one glass and their screwed. There are people on this site that are triggered to masturbate and search for pornography by far less than what you were showing."

The point's well taken, so my apology for having used the avatar in the first place and for having caused anyone to stumble.

I disagree. I don't think porn is a bad thing. Sure we all got sucked into a downward spiral, but at the end of the day, porn is a good thing that can enhance relationships when used properly and within, keyword here, moderation. The psychological effect you're talking about comes more from the mainstream media than the pornography industry. They're the ones who throw the cult of celebrity in our faces constantly. They're the ones that make people lust after models and have unrealistic expectations for women and the like. Long story short. Dislike the right thing.

Whoa ho ho! While you can say your opinion and or whatever you like within rules and reason, them is fightin' words round here. It's like you painted yourself red and walked into an arena with a bunch of angry bulls. Balls to you sir!

But I totally agree with you...dislike the right thing. Or rather wrong thing. The fact that people can and do struggle with art means those people (read: us) have a problem.

For me, if it was produced with the intention of being something whack off to then it's porn. If it was produced with the intention of being admired in a gallery then its art.

The problem may not be the object by itself, but what our mind creates from that object.
The nude is not the problem, but what any of the so different types of minds could think about it.

Nice insight, I completely agree. Honestly I am not triggered by external images. I swear, the last few urges that I acted on have after having substantial time clean was a feeling in my gut, it was my freaking libido growing, like all of a sudden my base chakra just became supercharged and if I could have brought that energy upwards, transmuted or sublimated it, I'd be in a much happier better place right now.
