Going to give it a go...

Discussion in 'Rebooting - Porn Addiction Recovery' started by disciplinemakeththegeez, Aug 28, 2015.

  1. I don't really know how this forum works and whether anyone is going to see this so I'm not expecting a response - I just feel like putting this in writing in a public space will help me stick to my plan to give up porn (or 'reboot' as it seems to be called here).

I think I share many people here's reasons for giving up porn, but have never managed to do it before now. But enough is enough and I need to regain some control.

I'm going to say no porn for 120 days. Hopefully I won't want to look at any again after that anyway and ultimately I'd like to give up forever, but I think the psychological impact of telling myself it's not 'for good' in the first instance might be helpful.

I'm definitely not going to commit to not masturbating for all that time - but I'm not going to masturbate for two weeks.

I'm going to keep tallies every day.

So there it is, written out. Hopefully that will make it easier to stick to.

It can be done, dude - freedom can be a lifestyle, so long as 1) you remember always what the chains and dungeon of PMO were like and 2) you make active use of this recovery site, and journal all your ups and downs (be honest and tell on yourself), read other journals of guys who are succeeding, and gather up the tools for recovery and success. With you journal, you will also find natural followers flocking toward you in support and sharing their strategies.

    Welcome to NoFap.
That's a great starting goal, but I would encourage you to extend it for life once you reach it. The damaging effects of porn are still very real, even after a reboot.
I would also encourage you to give up masturbating. It can be a slippery slope. one month it's just once a week, then it's twice, then you add a little bit of porn, and the next thing you know your back to a full blown addiction. And that doesn't even touch on the chemical problems masturbation can cause for you. When you orgasm, oxytocin is released into your brain, which bonds you to the person/or thing that helped you release it. (in this case, masturbation) When you masturbate, high levels of dopamine are released into your brain, which can be very addicting, and desensitize it to the simple joys in life, and makes everything feel gray and dissatisfying. These two combined make masturbation by itself addicting. And no one likes how an addict acts.

  4. Thanks all.

I definitely do intend to give up up porn completely.

Am not going to give up masturbation though as it causes me no problems and I find it beneficial for my health and wellbeing. Porn however is a different story - all sorts of reasons I want to give that up from ethical to personal.

Good man. And have faith in yourself. If you see guys [and a few gals] on this site who have given up PMO for months or years, understand that they were one where you are now. They did it. You can do it too.
Everyone here is supportive, so feel free to ask for advice should you need it. :)
