Herbal supplements, psych meds, etc.

I wonder if herbal supplements or psych meds might help a person break porn addiction? In my case, I sometimes use pornography to self-medicate for depression and anxiety.

The question is which ones might be appropriate for you. (technically there are vitamins and vitamin like things that are not herbs but not precription meds either)

If you are not into doing the research, finding a good practitioner is the way to go. Of course, even a good practitioner may have the belief PMO doesn't cause issues, a lot of people will automatically assume that has no bearing on your issues. Or say someone thinks it's not biological at all and you just need to do talk therapy and meditate.

I think what might help might not be obvious. For example there might be some stuff that you might take that's good for you and/or your mind, but it doesn't necessarily have a direct impact on porn addiction - but maybe it takes the level of stress down a bit. Life doesn't work on a do this for that basis only, sometimes it might take a combination of a lot of things but that means you gotta look at things in detail, and it make take time and consistency in trying that set of things to start seeing results.

I know you are talking about medical practitioners above, but it reminded me of a similar attitude among mental health practitioners. When I am getting talk therapy, I often mention that I believe I have an unhealthy PMO problem. ALWAYS, the mental health people tell me that I should NOT be concerned. I've been to at least 6 therapists over the past 30 years, and I can never get any encouragement or advice in quitting.

I think good therapy is hard to find anyway, frankly I think a lot of what's available out there is WAY too slow and people have a lot more going on that needs a lot more support and understanding. Gary Wilson talks about that attitude in his book, if you can maybe print out an article from his website and give it to an open minded therapist MAYBE they can help you with it. But of course, you can also just work on other issues and if it helps with your mental health in general that's something, even if it is not directly impacting the PMO problem.

I have depression and anxiety. I think my problem is a deficiency in the neurotransmitter GABA, so I have been experimenting with l-theanine for a couple of weeks. It seems to help a little bit. I also tried some CBD oil Friday, but I'm not sure if that is as helpful.

Anyway, while I was binging on pornography yesterday, I also took some drops of l-theanine with caffeine. Normally when I view pornography I become very obsessive about clicking on EVERY interesting link. Even if I'm bored and exhausted from hours of browsing, I worry that I might overlook something "good". ... I noticed that the l-theanine seemed to reduce this obsessive behavior slightly. I didn't feel like I needed to be quite so thorough.

I agree that supplements can have risks and unpleasant side effects even though they are non-prescription. I was taking inositol because it is another supplement that helps with depression. I noticed that I kept having sharp arthritis-like joint pains in random locations of my body that would appear and then go away after a few minutes. I stopped taking the inositol, and the pains stopped. They weren't unbearable pains because they were so brief, but it showed me that side effect can happen.
