I am 51 year old male, and I have struggled with a pornography addiction since college. When I was younger, I saw PMO as a necessary evil due to my poor prospects of romance. Strangely, as I have aged the addiction has become WORSE - even though my libido is far less. I don't understand why I continue with this behavior when my libido is practically gone. (?)

I have struggled with depression and anxiety since college, and that seems to be getting worse with age too.

About 8 years ago, I suddenly decided to abstain from sex and alcohol. This resolution was remarkably easy, but two weeks later I had a mental breakdown and became briefly psychotic. I had never experienced anything like psychosis before, so I didn't receive any treatment. Luckily I got better gradually without treatment. Unfortunately, I did a lot of stupid things for a year or two such as giving away most of my savings (ugh). However, the psychosis helped me abstain from sex and alcohol. After two years, I returned to PMO, but I have continued to abstain from alcohol. I hope I never go back to alcohol.

I feel like the solution for me is to learn. I have to learn by making mistakes over and over again apparently, but hopefully in time I will learn how to live my life better. That is why I chose "learning" as my account name.

I hope people here might share their insights. I am more interested in talking than keeping a personal log. (I guess I don't feel confident enough to challenge myself too much yet) :)

Welcome! In the perspective of learning I suggest you to glance over the private message was sent to you automatically: there are lots of resources you can start with. Also I invite @StopTheMusic to welcome you with his messages full of great material.

I used to think the same way when I was at high school. "It's my only vice! I need it!". That's what I used to tell myself.
I got many more vices then (like cigarettes and sometimes drinking) and as a gift for insisting asking no help, I received borderline and obsessive compulsive personality traits!
That's true, I made innumerable mistakes but sometime IMO one should try to live the consequences of his choises directly on his skin. Or a mistake can become a deception, a pretext.

Best wishes on your path!

  3. Hey @Visor - thanks for the mention.

    Hey @learning ,

Welcome to NoFap! You are in the right place. My experience here is that I needed to learn the program and also get involved with the community.

The best resource I found was the “Getting Started with NoFap” guide. It is on the NoFap homepage and you can download it for free from this link https://www.nofap.com/forum/index.php?threads/new-users-list-of-rebooting-resources.50878/

    Then, watch this video:

It is really good and explains so much about how the blasting of porn images into the brain in high definition on high speed internet while slamming porn sounds into the ears with headphones can literally change the way your brain demands sexual stimulation.

The video explains it better than I can.

Also, a great page is https://www.nofap.com/forum/index.php?threads/new-users-list-of-rebooting-resources.50878/ my experience is that by reading every link and watching every video, I learned so much.

Then, I got involved with the community. I'm not anyone special on here, I don't have any magic powers. But, I can say hello to new members, post my journal entries, remember to “like” peoples posts, and offer my experience, strength and hope where appropriate.

Looking forward to seeing you around on the forums,

    L

PS - Think of pmo like a wolf. Stay near the center of the group with the winners and the wolf has a more difficult time finding you. But, stray near the edges of the community and the wolf can pick you off.

  4. One of the ways I got involved with the fellowship was by reading some really great journals. Click "Watch Thread" in the upper right to get alerts when new posts are made. Here are just a few:

There are many more, and you can discover them on your own. But, these are great places to start.

This is a work in progress. So, if a journal has changed or is no longer active, look around there are some amazing journals on here.

Welcome to NoFap where you are amongst friends who are here to encourage you and sometimes challenge you but not judge you.

The enemy is here to steal, kill and destroy. What are your current strategies for combating the enemy called PMO?

Welcome, stopping PMO will be the best decision you can ever make. I promise it will make your life better. You mentioned that your "craving for porn increased" even though your libido decreased. The reason is that porn addiction is in your brain. Being addicted to porn is like being addicted to a drug. When a drug addict first uses a drug they experience a great high but over time it takes more drugs to get the "high". Porn is the same but instead of more porn you need more variety and then it becomes more and more difficult to achieve orgasm.

Look forward to you joining us in 40+, amigo. There's a lot of great guys in our corner of the world! Just journal it up and hang out for a while. We will strengthen one another -- that's a promise! :)

The personal log is your anchor. Don't feel it necessary to post daily or anything. I post more like monthly, if that, for 2 years. It's just your space. And, it helps!

Lately I've been trying to think of each day as an opportunity to learn something and hopefully remember what I learn for future encounters with the enemy.

This morning I made the mistake of trying to take a quick look at some porn, but that quick look became about 8 hours. The "O" in PMO is usually unattainable for me due to my age (and maybe the evolution of the addiction as @Former_CD mentioned in post #6).

Part of the solution must be to accept that I can't take just a quick look. It never ever works out that way, but I keep telling myself it will be different this time. LOL ... I don't have much of a strategy.

Unfortunately I had to hit rock bottom before I could stop. I realized tgat it was my addictions or my family. You have to reach the point where you are ready to stop. As you have pointed out you have to develop a plan that works for you. You can find my pkan in my journal in the 40 plus forum.
