How cold are your cold showers?

I was just wondering do you consider it a cold shower if it's not on the coldest possible setting?

Or do you consider anything 'cold' to be a cold shower?

My shower goes from 1-10 on coldest (where 1 is literally freezing cold) and often I am having mine at about 3. It's still damn cold but I wonder if the colder the shower, the more the benefits?

I don't have a numerical setting on mine so I just crank it all the way over and count time. This is obviously going to vary over the seasons a bit even if it's early morning, I mean the plumbing has a hot water heater but not a cold water cooler. But with people doing this stuff they eventually move on to ice baths even so... I think it's all in the broader context of gradually working up to it. You can do it with amount of time and you can do it with adjustment of temperature, if you have that option.

I feel like you would have to fill a bucket with the water and drop a thermometer in and tell us that number for this to make sense

(I actually did this in my last apartment years ago and I think the water was 6c if I remember correctly)

Yeah sometimes I think I kind of wimp out of freezing cold water because it's so unpleasant but I could work on that.

Oh. I realize I am a wuss. I just put it to where it feels cold, I reckon it is around 15c. It's nowhere near ice cold though.

Still something. I believe I'll get more used to it and gradually work my way down. :)

It's almost as cold as my tap water will go, which this time of year where I live is really damn cold. All I know is it's cold enough to start literally hurting after about half a minute. Hoping to build up longer and colder tolerance as I go.

  8. No. If it hurts or gives you a headache, it's too cold and isn't healthy. Everything within reasonable limits.

^ That. Or more specifically as cold as you can stand it now, it doesn't mean you won't be able to stand colder in time and with training. But just as you don't try to bench press twice your body weight when you start working out you don't try the most extreme with this right off the bat, it's just another form of exercise.

Look at it this way, it's good to have colder than you can stand so you have a setting you can dial up to in time - otherwise you only have the duration of the shower to work with. And of course it's a huge leap to something like ice bath, and remember people seriously into this don't just do the cold they'll do some kind of exercise. A concern I have about listing it as one of many things on a checklist with PMO recovery is people don't get that it's part of a comprehensive plan when other people do it. We haven't even talked about the heat extreme - even the Ice Man will get into a sauna sometimes. Hot/cold showers with short duration is a good way to go with this and the hot will give you recovery time basically.

    Good points!

I also sometimes only stay under it for a few seconds.

Does longer in cold showers = better?

Yeah you can think of it like how much time doing cardio. And hot/cold contrast showers like interval training.

    10. I like hot showers. But short ones. It helps me relax and my body wouldn't handle the cold.

That's a common assumption. I can accept you don't think so since you're saying it, but we're also qualifying it and there's no set amount. If you did several minutes of hot water and only 10 seconds of cold, will you really go into a terrible illness or is it more like being uncomfortable for a while until things settle? Physiologically the hot dialates the blood vessels and cold constricts so it's an exercise for the vascular system. There's a reason for doing it and it isn't to numb your balls so you don't fap which will obviously wear off in time, which is also why you're not going to get sick from a few seconds of cold exposure. People sometimes accidentally get exposed to cold water and they live to tell the tale, I think it's more likely it's a psychological resistance.

I used to take cold shower. I'm not saying my body can't handle it like that. It's a heart problem. If I could I would probably do cold shower again because you feel better afterward.

There's certainly contraindications, and I don't think people should jump in all cold. I still don't do all cold but end with X amount of time on cold, which I have gradually increased over weeks and I don't have a heart condition.
