How long will I need to reboot?

Discussion in 'Rebooting - Porn Addiction Recovery' started by Deleted Account, Jun 16, 2019.

  1. It's a question I've been wondering. I know there's not really any way to know an exact figure, but I'm hoping that I'll at least be able to get a rough estimate on about how long the reboot process will take for me.

Some background on me. I'm seventeen, and I started to get into porn between the ages of ten and eleven, right around the onset of puberty. The deepest point for my addiction was probably at around fifteen. There was about a year when I was twelve where I didn't really have the chance to look at porn much because of a change in living circumstances, but I did continue to masturbate. As soon as I had my own room again, back into the addiction I went at around thirteen, and this time around it was even worse.

Since I was fifteen, it's been constantly up and down. There have been times when I rarely masturbated or watched porn for a few months, and then times when I was into it heavily. It varies quite a bit anymore. o_O

So, with all that in mind, about how long should my recovery take? I've heard of men that take up to a year or two to recover, but that's typically in severe cases where they're in their 30s and have been doing it since eleven or twelve basically non-stop. I'm hoping the fact that I haven't been doing it for as long, and inconsistently that it'll result in a quicker recovery time. What do you guys think?

  2. It takes 63 days to rewire your brain according to Caroline Leaf, Neuroscientist. However, I was talking to someone who is 900+ days into NoFap. I asked why he was still on the forum and he said because to be fully over an addiction it takes 3 years. Your brain might rewire itself in 63 days where it isn't a habit anymore but the effects still last for much longer than that. So I have heard.

Bro, to be honest, you shouldn't be worrying about counting the days till you "fully recover". First off, that's not a one-day accomplishment, you recover over time not just one day in the future. Also, the thing about NoFap is that it's about rebuilding a positive life, and counting down to a recovery date would be wasting your present life. (don't take this as an offense, it's just what I think about the topic of how long it takes to recover)

A big number in your counter means nothing. It is up to you to know when you are cured.

  5. Good advice

  6. This makes sense...but I mean, wouldn't I just feel 'normal' by that point? It doesn't make sense that you would really feel any different because you would feel the way you had already become used to feeling, but does that make you cured necessarily? I don't think so. o_O

  7. Nope, the guy with greater than 900+ days still has the urges. It kinda sucks :D

  8. Thanks! I know that it's not a 'one-day accomplishment', but I still want to feel like I'm moving towards something or making it somewhere. Otherwise where do you find the motivation? That's something I tend to struggle with, finding motivation to continue, and my mind takes advantage of that.

  9. I don't know whether that will be the case for me though. I'm guessing this guy is probably a lot older than me, and has probably been using porn a whole lot longer than me. Even after a few weeks, the urges tend to be very minimal for me. That's why I asked how long it will probably take me personally to reboot. I guess the best way to find out the answer to that is to just see where I end up after abstaining for a while.

Depends what do you mean by normal.

  11. IMO Ideally you will have the confidence and the desire to attract females. When you start to attract females you will gain positive re-enforcement in your action and then you will not find the same desire in the synthetic form. Organic is always better than synthetic, except for may oil in your car ;). This is all of course dependent on what you spend your time doing outside of nofap. If you spend it playing video games, not much will change. But if you spend it bringing balance to your life then you have more enjoyment.

  12. As in not being addicted to porn. You wouldn't feel like anything out of the ordinary, would you? By the time you were actually past the addiction, you might honestly have no clue because it's such a slow change that you couldn't really tell that you felt any different. Obviously, I wouldn't really know because I haven't made it very far with NoFap yet. Maybe I'll be surprised, who knows.

I'm going to hope I really do see that big of a change. :emoji_fingers_crossed:

  13. That makes sense. I don't really spend much time playing video games these days, I like to research things that interest me, and I've picked up pencil drawing as a hobby. Let me tell you, YouTube works wonders for things like that lol. :D I get the organic is better than synthetic thing for sure. Trust me, I'm not arguing that I don't feel better on NoFap, I feel a pretty significant difference within a few days. It's just, at one point can you say you're finally over it? I want to know how long it will be before I can function as myself again, without damage caused by porn getting in the way.

I cannot answer that since I am was never an addict, I was cured since day one, but here I am, doing everything I can, holding on to what I am, pretending I'm a superman.

For me, the motivation to moving forwards is the happy lifestyle you're creating. Clearly, if you keep coming back to trying to stop masturbating and watching porn, then something is wrong with masturbation and porn. If it was a thing that was ok for you to do, you wouldn't be on nofap in the first place.

Hi there. There is an assumption that is implied by what you say. That if someone has been addicted to porn for a longer time, the reboot will also be longer. This is not the case, but I realise that will seem counterintuitive to you. However, the reason for this seeming paradox does make sense when you think it through...

The particular type of porn that guys get addicted to is high speed internet porn (HSIP). However, the older guys spent their formative years (as a child and adolescent) looking at naughty magazines and old VHS video cassettes. However, all you have ever known is HSIP. And you did this from the outset of puberty until two days ago! The effect of HSIP on the formative and developing brain is profound. This is because of neuroplasticity. So, it takes much longer for a teenager with a 6-year porn addiction to recover than it does a 40 year old with a 30-year porn addiction! o_O

So, to give an estimate as to how long it will take is very hard to say. :( From what you have said, my guess is it will take less than a year from now if you stop P + M + O with no relapses. I am guessing between 6-9 months. I hope that helps.
