When i forced myslef in the week end i ended up looking for porn like i cant do my paper i kept Procrastinating on things, can some one give me some tips to defeat procrastination?

I cant turn off my phone since my job need me to have my phone near, but every time i grab my phone i was just like in the different zone.. Idk what to do

The way I understand procrastination is for 3 potential reasons, which is either that
  • Idealistic. You want things to go perfectly so you end up not working on it at all until you know you'll get it right, or you want to feel 100% ready.
  • Avoidant. Sometimes doing certain activities make us feel a certain way, for example, if the work for college was difficult and making you feel dumb or frustrated or behind.
  • Operational. The last reason, and the one I deal with sometimes, is lack of clarity. When the goal is vague it can be hard to get ourselves to work on it 'cause we don't know where to start.
I think regardless of which of these feels most familiar, or if you meet all 3, the common thread between combating these various reasons is concretely breaking down and defining what needs to be done to the smallest steps, accepting that your efforts will never be perfect or executed as planned(grabbing your phone here and there but still getting some work done is better than not working at all) and working on identifying any negative emotions associated with the work that needs to be done and being your own friend and coaching and supporting yourself through those feelings. Take it bit by bit, if you can only 1 or 2 hours before losing focus that's fine. If you can only do 20 minutes that's fine too. But the more you avoid working on the assignments the easier it becomes to continue not working on them.

I defeated procrastination doing what I have to do, in the exact moment I realize it. I mean, if a colleague ask you something on whatsapp, don't wait a comfortable moment, answer in the exact moment he/she asks you. or when you realize you have to do something, just start to do it, and if you are doing something else, do it when you finish the other thing. and of course, noPMO helps. hahaha

no matter if you want it or not, force yourself to do it, without thinking of it, just do it, like a machine.

Hi,
I had a struggle with that, too. What helped me was more structure in my life and doing things together with a companion.

Maybe you can get more structure in your life by having routines (like a certain time when you finally quit your work - there might be exceptions - or a certain time when you usually go to bed, no entertainment allowed when the time is up - there might be exceptions - a certain time when you cook healthy food for you or a certain day / time when you clean up the house / kitchen / car - there might be exceptions - and of course a time to finish your work ... ). A structured day helps me to feel busy and to realise that my time is limited.

Sometimes it also helps me to have a companion around. Even if he / she is not doing the same thing as you, it helps to see that he / she is busy with something. That creates a busy mood. And then you can also make an arrangement "when we both finished our assignment, we will do something nice. But only if we both finished." You do not want to let your companion wait so long, do you?

Yeah, totally agree. I use to procrastinate a lot, but in the past month or so I've been just going straight in, like the post above mentioned and it is hundred percent less stressful to just go work at it right away then wait. Plus there are some useful stuff that I didn't consider before and will definitely implement it into my routine. As some who is just starting University soon, any advice is much appreciated.
