I masturbated to sensation, not porn. But the sensation wasn't as comfortable.

It was during a flatline, so I figured "why not?". I didn't test with porn though. It means the flatline needs more time to heal, probably right? but like I didn't feel too guilty after as if I watched porn. anyone else feel that way? does it have to do with the fact that dopamine shoots up higher with porn and the cost of losing all that dopamine makes you feel worse after or could I be wrong?

I wonder if that even counts as a relapse.

"Cost of losing all that dopamine"

Watching porn doesn't cause you to lose dopamine. You don't have a daily allowance of dopamine. Your brain creates dopamine when it sees something it likes, food, women, music... Porn.

What happens when your brain releases too much dopamine is that the receptors that pick up that dopamine begin to decline. Dopamine is created by your brain and the receptors pick it up and that's what makes you feel good. Picture someone throwing a ball, in this case the ball is dopamine and the person catching it is a receptor. Without the receptor, you wouldn't get the feeling from the dopamine.

What happens when you give your brain too much dopamine from doing abnormal activities such as drugs and Porn. Your brain releases way too much dopamine than it should and it gets used to that. So your brain finds a way to handle all this dopamine, so what it does is it shuts off some receptors so that it no longer gets bombarded with tonnes of dopamine. The only bad thing is now when you stop using whatever it is that's giving you all that extra dopamine, in this case it's Porn. You now have fewer receptors to pick up on the dopamine your brain produces, which is why normal things are no longer considered exciting. Your brain can't pick up the dopamine because you've deadened the receptors.

    Yes it's a relapse.
    You masturbated.

According to your counter, your goal was to
    • Not watch porn
    • Not masturbate
You violated one of these conditions so it's a relapse.
    Next time don't test yourself.

    Actually it's not a relapse.

It's only a relapse if he said he wanted to quit masturbating. If his goal is to quit Porn but not masturbation then he didn't relapse.

If he said he wanted to quit both masturbation and Porn then yes it is a relapse.

His counter says he wants to quit both porn and masturbation

There's nothing wrong with wanking without fantasy and working on the sensation as long as you don't go for orgasm. I used to do it about once a week, it's good because it gets your dick ready for pussy.

Don't worry you can go for orgasm, but don't make it the main goal

I see. Alright. I am a little confused though - what do you mean to not make it the main goal?

The main goal is the sensation, being there in the moment and focusing on how it feels and enjoying yourself, this gets you ready for real sex, sex isn't all about the orgasm, but porn has made you think so. I used to do this every week, then had sex with a goal focusing on the sensation instead of just orgasm and it was mindblowing.

In my experience porn shoots the most dopamine into my system. It's all about the rush, not about sexual satisfaction.
When I only think about watching porn I get very excited (when I don't block this way of thinking). I mean I can use porn only in my imagination but the thought alone of acting out from fantasy to pictures/movies is enough to shoot enough to make me tremble (more like inside, but I think an observer would see many changes in my appearance in that moment, as with a drug addict). In the process of PMO there are many details that pushes dopamine and so I tend to continue for hours. Especially because finishing off can be very difficult for me, not physically but because I just can't find the "number one" - the right content which seems to be worthy for cumming. This happens when I edge for too long and I think the reason for this is that the constant dopamine wave becomes more important than MO and at some point this wave must peak, so the edging continues while the dopamine is going down. At this point I use to look desperately for the "right" pictures/scenes to finish off but can't find them. And so the final sequence feels disappointing compared to the middle sequence. No wonder it often goes on with another ride of dragon chasing (PMO).
This is a very exhausting process.
After a period of abstinence the brain reacts with more excitement to every trace of porn. However I made the experience that it's not about the bodies or the sex itself. What we miss is the inmense strong effect of dopamine. Otherwise it would be much more easier to quit or change our porn consumption.
Have you had this experience, when you looked at porn after a long time and despite all the excitement you're kind of surprised about the grossness and bluntness of the content?

We're not mashines and every reboot is different. Nevertheless I think it's helpful to know a little about the neuro-chemical dimension of the problem. There we don't differ much.
For me, the main issue is how our brains works. Porn is just exploiting that.
And because the disposability of porn is such a threat for our already manipulated brains we should discontinue it. If you don't want to relapse to porn make sure you DON'T HAVE ANY ACCESS to it in your daily life. That's the first step.

About masturbation: it works similar to PMO. It seems more natural, "softer" so to speak. But since I'm having porn on my mind when I do it and since I feel the dopamine rush here as well, I think it's better to go hard mode. I don't think the Porn Reboot with MO'ing isn't possible. I don't think the Reboot requires a certain numbers of days. But some guidelines we do need. If I trusted my own mind alone, I would be lost.
As long as I masturbate I "play the game" - that's what I think. And what's the point of masturbation anyway?
I think that's the reason masturbation-weaning is so popular here, besides religious believes and the believe in semen-retention. When you want to change your life - go out and enjoy life instead of caving, being pro-active instead of bingeing, having sex instead of looking at / imagining sex - why do you want to keep this old habit?
But in my opinion Rebooting must come to an end some day. When it has become a lifestyle. I don't think you can afford to watch porn when you have reached this point (as a former addict) and it wouldn't make sense anyway. But I don't think that means to live "monk style" - always on guard not to be tempted or to touch ourselves. Anyway thats just me speculating about the future :emoji_nerd:

But sorry for wandering from the subject and for being lengthy!
As for sensation and masturbation I would suggest either abstain from masturbation entirely or enjoy it in moderation. Just don't fall in the trap of self-deceiving. At least I personally would draw the line like this: playing with oneself vs real sex. I would prefer to test such things out in intimate relationships as @Chris Jackson told us, not in self-experimenting.
Nevertheless it is at least a good sign when you're sensitive again and when you can enjoy "the sensation" more than "the rush".

All the best for your "Journey" and few temptations!

I'm not too surprised about the bluntness and grossness of the content because my 'porn' was 'porn-subs', guys in casual business attire, dress clothes, well groomed men, and suits. I will say it has robbed me of real dates and enjoying real sex during my 20's, and I want my fetishes to be turned into real experiences. I wouldn't say they were based on Porn sub use, but I could be wrong? I wonder...?

    (yes I am gay)
