Congrats on 955 days...so close to 1000! Question: Had you found any success outside 12 step, and do you believe the 12 step program is a requirement for all addicts?

piogoretti, no, I don't think a 12 step group is a requirement for all addicts. I see people find success in religion, or filters, or groups like this, and I'm grateful for any way that helps others.

For me, the longest I was able to be free of PMO between the ages of 16 and 29 was once when I got 4 months. It occurred with a type of vow to God associated with my faith tradition. I had great peace for those few months.

Then life started hurting. It felt like carrying a 500 pound rock on my back not going back to PMO. I got weary of fighting and how bleak the world felt without the security blanket of PMO. I flew back to PMO for comfort and was only too glad to be back into a pattern that seemed to make life bearable and colorful again. So I was back to PMO for the next seven years, just about every day and oftentimes more.

I tried my religion again but this time it didn't work. I tried cognitive behavioral therapy, medication, an accountability partner, exercise, hobbies. While these are worthwhile things, and I still am involved with most of those, they didn't take away the PMO. That came with the 12 step group, which is why that tool is special to me.

The difference is that a 12 step group is not fighting. It's based on a higher power: leaning on another force outside myself who will fight the addiction for me. Having people to talk to face-to-face about it in meetings, to ask advice from, and to call provides a safe haven of recovery. The day-at-a-time approach means I don't commit to anymore than the 24 hours ahead, so it's not a vow and it doesn't feel like taking on some lifelong commitment. It's the easiest and most effective thing I've used.

It works for me. And I like forums like this too, and counseling, and all those other great tools like distraction, exercise, etc. that are great supplements.

  8. I can only imagine the kind of mental and emotional anguish you felt during those years of porn and masturbation. You've gone through a lotta dark days due to PMO. I was touched by your journey of your trials and eventual victory of your desires. I sympathized with your situations; I myself had started off viewing porn on the family computer while everyone was away, feeling great pleasure while I was alone to wallow in the twisted porn I viewed. I was caught a few times but I never allowed it to stopped me.

Thank you very much for sharing your story, it has deeply affected and inspired many people here on the site, myself included. I wish you luck and success as you have left porn and masturbation in the dust for a brighter and dynamic life.
