I wish I never knew about Christianity

A group for members of all religions, or no religion at all, to talk about religion

  1. Because if I didn't know I wouldn't have thought I'd be condemned to Hell, a place of eternal torture by being burned alive if I didn't believe in Christianity. If you sin, you are immediately cursed by God, even if you didn't know it was a sin. So by doing PMO you are cursed. On the other hand if you believe you are condemned to a live of servitude to God. You have to read the Bible, and obey God to the letter, otherwise you'll be tortured. This is blackmail. I'd even quit believing in Christianity only for the fact that if I do I will wail and gnash my teeth, being burned alive in Hell with all of the rapists, murderers etc just for not believing. A lot of people haven't even touched a Bible in their life and they don't PMO. But they will be spared from eternal torture right? Every moment since I ever heard about God my life has been anguish and a mental nightmare. Evil people routinely get away with all the evil they do to other people yet they aren't punished by God. But certain people have to live life in misery just because they aren't God's favourites.

That type of style putting more emphasys on the action than in the faith is more catholic, but if someone born in a house that practice a christianity of other denomination, like luteranism, where the most important thing is the faith and not so much the action, he is screwed.

  3. All religions say theirs is the truth. All denominations within a religion say theirs is the truth. Seems to me it is quite messy to decide and know what the truth truly is, doesn't it? Now if you are so sure that your understanding of truth is correct then I do not know how anything anyone could say could help you.

  4. I'm a Christian. I'm not here to argue. Yes, everyone united to Adam is condemned to hell; everyone united to Christ will know eternal life. This is true, at least if you accept the Bible to be true revelation from God. But, to be honest, it sounds like you haven't read the Bible. Have you read it from cover to cover? Even many so-called Christians haven't actually read the Bible. Where does it say "obey God to the letter or you'll be tortured"? PMO is not the unforgivable sin. What gets you to heaven is Jesus' obedience, not your obedience. This is why Jesus came: to save us, not to show us a way to supposedly save ourselves. Most of what you say in your post is a caricature of Christianity. If you're going to reject it, I'd suggest seeking to understand it better on its own terms. And for that, you should forget what you think you know about Christianity and read the Bible itself.

  5. I haven't read the whole bible. There's something like 1136 pages. I find the parables very difficult to understand, mostly because they're encrypted on purpose. The bible says everyone that is a Christian is a servant to God. Jesus says you have to be like a little child in order to enter Heaven, otherwise you won't enter under any circumstances. Meaning you have to be obedient to God, completely innocent, don't lie, speak the truth at all times, and never do anything wrong. Which discounts any adult from escaping Hell. When Jesus talked to the rich man he said donate all your properties and give to the poor, and I'm pretty sure that guy lost his salvation seeing as he left. If you're in sin you're still going to Hell right? Jesus could just erase your name from the Book of Life even if you accepted him prior. If you're going through a period in your life where you just don't believe in God or Jesus and hate them, you're going to Hell if you died in that moment. In Matthew it says all of the tares will be collected and burned and in one of the parables one of the people at the party was not of the kingdom of God would be torn to pieces. If you don't forgive others God won't forgive you. Say if someone did something like kill your mother and you never forgive them you lose your salvation and are going to Hell.

  7. There are parts of the Bible that are difficult to understand. Jesus spoke in parables on purpose, but the Bible isn't intentionally cryptic otherwise. If you read through the Bible, with a desire to truly understand it, then you will understand the main points even if you don't get all the details. John 3:16 is a popular verse because it encapsulates the main idea of the Bible: Jesus came to save his people from their sin and to give them eternal life and joy.

Mark 10:13-16 13 And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 15 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it." 16 And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.

Where do you get the idea that this passage is about obedience, innocence, not lying, or never doing anything wrong? The point is about humility and trust. Children are trusting of their parents. Younger children aren't really capable of the sort of pride that Jesus is attacking here--the Pharisees were convinced they were righteous in themselves and had no need for Jesus. To approach Jesus, you need to recognize you are imperfect.

So the point is the exact opposite of what you say: Jesus isn't demanding perfection. He is illustrating humble trust.

Matthew 19:16-22 16 And behold, a man came up to him, saying, "Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?" 17 And he said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments." 18 He said to him, "Which ones?" And Jesus said, "You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, 19 Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself." 20 The young man said to him, "All these I have kept. What do I still lack?" 21 Jesus said to him, "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." 22 When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

This is not a command for all people throughout time to sell all their possessions if they are going to enter eternal life. This was a one-time circumstance that Jesus used as a teaching point. If you obey God, but refuse to follow Jesus, then you will never see eternal life. Rich or poor, it doesn't matter. God requires that you follow Jesus. The test that Jesus gave was for him to sell everything as a sign of his willingness to follow. This rich man was willing to do anything for salvation except follow Jesus.

The message for you and for me is: Following Jesus is more important than anything else this life has to offer, even riches. Love Jesus more than your riches.

The only time any believer becomes 100% free from sin is at the point of death. It is impossible not to sin in this life because the remaining corruption of sin hasn't been fully done away with.

Psalm 19:12 Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults.

1 John 1:8-10 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Everything about your post suggests that you think salvation is up you you. It's not. Salvation is a work of God.

Romans 9:15-16 15 For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." 16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.

Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Stop worrying about whether this or that sin will send you to hell, or this or that act will send you to hell. Be like a child and trust that your heavenly Father knows how to save his own people. If you believe that Jesus Christ has come to save you from sin and to grant eternal life, then you will be saved. Stop reading the Bible as if it's some harsh taskmaster. The Bible is the story of God's saving love for his wandering children.

  8. Why does choosing to not believe in God cause you to experience more lust than before to where you can't control it? Because you are sinning? The bible says God gives people over to their lusts. Meaning your flesh rules you. The bible says you have to depend on God for everything but he doesn't protect you from bad things happening to you. Yet he appointed Satan as the god of this world. So if you believe or don't believe you're screwed. Yet I've seen people believe in nothing and they're very happy and successful. People that have literally never touched a bible in their life and sin constantly. So we're the unlucky ones to be born at random to be in circumstances that encourage addiction and other people are just lucky enough to never need to be addicted to anything, therefore they are immune to ever needing to seek out all this hypocritical religious crap.

  9. Whether one is a Christian or not it is possible to be addicted to pornography. Whether one is a Christian or not one may have (at least from an external perspective) a "very happy and successful" life. So what? What do you think Christianity is about? Christianity is about the truth--you either believe it because it's true, or you ignore it because you think it's made-up fantasy. I believe in Christ because I believe what happened in the Bible is historically true, not because he makes my life more successful, easier, or guarantees I'll be free from sin in this life (news flash: he doesn't). If you're convinced the Bible is "hypocritical religious crap," then why even bring it up? Honestly, there's a lot of content in your posts that suggests to me you don't even understand Christianity correctly to begin with.

I agree with above @Wilderness Wanderer I would suggest that you understand the bible for yourself, even if you find certain verses difficult to understand there are website and christian videos on youtube that can help with your understanding. When I was younger I accepted a lot of misconceptions about Christianity that I had to unlearn as I got older.

This actually reminds me of a scene in a movie called 'God's not Dead' where an atheist is talking to his Christian mother about this, you might want to watch it.

  11. First guy, if you want to actually answer the questions I asked then go ahead. But that's impossible now as you're experiencing cognitive dissonance, and I'm the enemy now. I am done reading the bible there are too many hypocrisies and injustices in it. If you enjoy drinking the kool aid more power to you. I am finished with this thread.

    That's a pretty extreme interpretation.

The core belief in most mainstream religions is something like "Yeah, the world is completely screwed up but your best bet is to do what you know deep down to be right regardless of your external circumstances. Through this process you might the world a little closer to Heaven, or at the very least, not move it closer to Hell".

Unfortunately many people do completely miss the point and focus on the sins of others rather than their own.

You don't seem to understand Christianity. Do you realize that Jesus loves you no matter what? He died for you. He took a bullet for you, and you don't even care to thank him. God is willing to forgive anyone at any time for their sins. People in Hell want to be in Hell; "The gates of Hell are locked from the inside." - C. S. Lewis. If you asked anybody in Hell if they wanted to go to Heaven, they would refuse. You don't have to fear going to Hell because God has already paid the price for your sins. He's ready to forgive any sin. You also misinterpret the Bible a lot. I don't think you were raised in mainstream Christianity because most Christians serious about their religion don't believe this stuff.

  14. I'm already in Hell in this life so I don't give a crap about the false heaven the bible talks about. "Hell is empty and the demons are here". If Jesus died for my sins then God would stop bothering me. Nah, I think I'm interpreting the bible very accurately. Recently I read about Lot having incest sex with his daughters. Lots of moral contradictions in the bible when it's supposed to be good. I couldn't care less about Churchianity and demoninations. If there is 100% concrete proof something is accurate I believe. All you can see in the Bible are never ending contradictions. God doesn't leave humans alone, he has to let Satan torture us, yet our sins are paid for in full supposedly. If that salvation involves neverending torture and suffering in this life I couldn't give a horse's butt about that salvation anymore. Regardless of what you do everyone is tortured in one way or another whether they believe or NOT. The Bible's definition of salvation is worthless and meaningless.

First, I already explained how suffering could exist in a world with God. A lot of this is about attitude as well. The resurrection makes it so that all of this evil is nothing. It doesn't matter what happens to you, because you're already saved. No amount of suffering can take you away from God. "The one who believes in me will live, even though they die" - John 11:25. What if I told you that God has experienced all the pain you are experiencing, and even more?
Second, I already read the passage you're talking about. (I've read most of Genesis.) What does their wrong-doing have to do with God's moral character? They did that because they thought they were the last humans on Earth. In fact, my Bible titled it "The Shameful Origins of the Moabites and the Ammonites." The Bible makes it clear that incest is wrong, even between those who are not biologically related. Read 1 Corinthians 5.
Third, there are many things you believe in that don't have 100% proof. Do you believe the Universe is 13.8 billion years old? What if it popped into existence 5 minutes ago, including all our memories with it? How do you know that the external world exists? It could all just be an illusion of your mind. You might just be a Boltzmann Brain, a brain that randomly formed by particle interactions that has all your memories, and will soon die. In reality, there's not a lot of things with 100% proof attached to them.
Also, you're extremely degrading. Try to speak with a little more respect.

  18. To god? He doesn't deserve my respect. He has a lot of explaining to do.
Nup, God experienced physical pain. Sure. But emotional pain – nope. Psychological abuse – nope. Was god molested when he was a little boy? Nope. Did he ever go through prolonged trauma? Nope. PTSD? Nope. People have gone through much worse than Jesus.
Regardless, it doesn't make it right. He could have said something to his daughters who decided to rape Lot by making him drunk. He just let it happen which means he approves of their behaviour.
Nope. God made it, then he abandoned us. He also crowned Satan as "God of this World" to torture us as he pleases. Just look at the people in North Korean concentration camps. They are completely abandoned to a meaningless life of suffering until they die. And this is also supposedly a part of his grand plan. What a joke.

First, I'm not just talking about God when you speak. I'm talking about all Theists as well. You act like we are less in dignity than you just for believing in something different. Many New Atheists are like this. It's worse than Evangelical Creationists.
Second, Jesus experienced all the pain that everyone has experienced ever.
Third, you're not understanding what I am saying. You say something, I reply, then you just say the same thing over again. Without free will, there would be no love. You can't force someone to love you. People need to be able to do evil in order to do good. God didn't crown Satan as the God of this World. Satan chose that title with his free will. I don't believe in an Islamic or Calvinist version of God.
Fourth, you strawmanned my argument when I talked about how things don't have 100% proof. The only things we know 100% are things deduced by logic, like that no square circles exist. Interestingly enough, the existence of God is one such thing.

  20. Your post literally makes zero sense whatsoever. You didn't even respond to what I said.
