    Hi everyone,

It's actually been quite a while since I've posted on here ... years to be exact.
I have always struggled with PMO and MO and have tried, at various times, to either cut back or quit all together.

Alas I find myself back here again after experiencing some apparent side effects relating to my activities.

First, the good news is that I have abstained from porn viewing for quite a number of months how.

However, masturbation is something I continue to struggle with.

The interesting thing I've noticed recently is that my habit has seemingly affected my sleep.
I never before in my life had sleep problems but lately I've been suffering from bouts of insomnia. Not every night, but a few days throughout the week.

I have been trying to eat better and exercise regularly, but one thing that seems to be a common denominator is masturbation ... or rather ... on the days when I do it, I seem to have poor sleep and the days when I abstain I have a rested full night's sleep.

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Over-or-chronic masturbation affecting sleep negatively?

I did read an article that said chronic masturbation could indeed cause insomnia because of hormone release during the activity.

I have been keeping a sleep journal and there is definitely a correlation here.

I have been masturbating since I was about 13 regularly and am turning 39 in a few short months.
My goal is to become an overall healthier person and quitting or at least reducing masturbation (I have always been daily or twice a day kind of person; sometimes three times) is one thing I firmly believe in my heart that will help me feel better, reduce my anxiety issues and depression problems, and help me to just feel good overall. AND help me sleep better again.

    Thanks for listening!

  2. I also started masturbating when young — believe it or not, only a single digit for me (although porn was unavailable at that age).

You are definitely going the right way with no-PM. Are you able to go for a no-PMO reboot, or is there a complication with a partner?

I have had insomnia all my life. Recently, I've started to sleep a little better… is this related to my brand new NoFap streak (I've never done it before)? Hmm, maybe!

    Good luck with your journey!

There were times during the last few years when I felt I couldn't fall asleep without PMOing - and indeed, in my first few weeks of rebooting, I had trouble falling asleep, or I'd wake up a couple of hours before my alarm rang and not manage to fall asleep again, but I think both of these occurrences were psychological, because there were places in the last couple of years where I'd stay for extended periods of time - such as dorms - where I knew I wouldn't PMO, no matter what, and I didn't have trouble falling asleep.

I feel you, mate. I have had this problem for years and it is one of the main reasons I'm trying to quit. When I fap - which tends to be late at night - I am unable to sleep or sleep well. when you fap excitery hormones are released and if you fap lots your dopamine receptors could be desensitised. Dopamine apparently plays a part in sleep. I have been sleep deprived most of my life. Good luck abstaining. X

it sounds more to me like a porn withdrawal symptom, but yeah could also be from masterbation too

  6. This past week has been full of relapses for me. My insomnia has really increased as well. Only got 3 hours last night. I think that insomnia can result from both rebooting and excessive PMO. On one hand you can have trouble falling asleep because of withdrawal while on the other hand you can have trouble staying asleep as a result of overstimulation. I guess if you're prone to insomnia, you can expect to have trouble sleeping regardless, at least throughout the beginning of your reboot. What's killing me is the reboot/relapse cycle that keeps my mind and body out of sync.
