"Regardless, I can't afford a designer to make themless intrusive right now."

    Hi Alexander!

Would it be interesting to get some volunteers to do this type of work? I hope that some designers would be more than happy to contribute to this. I was thinking about the creation of a sub thread for some design/code work. For example: Support (something like this :)). Unfortunately I'm no good at design otherwise you could count me in :).

Maybe this would, instead of paying for designers/coders, free up some money for server upkeep. You will need people who are skilled and willing to do this, but it might be worth a shot.

    May Nofap continue to thrive!

  2. I have tried this countless times in the past to some success. But at least 75% of volunteers drop off after a very short period of time. It is really hard to find talented people who actually are willing to trade their labor for free for any extended period of time. The moderation team and other volunteers here are a rarity. Good idea, but I do like the idea of having the ability to compensate people for their time. Of course we would accept volunteer work - and NoFap has something like 20 volunteers keeping us afloat. But we need to be able to afford paid services as well to complement this.

Edit: most of the stuff we contract for are relatively affordable and highly specialized. What are the odds we'll find a xenForo expert / programmer here with experience developing xenForo plugins? I'd say rather unlikely, and the cost would be bombarding ads around the forum every time we need something very specific done. Then there is about a 75% chance they won't follow through on the work. Having a small budget just seems far more effective to me ($150 for a small plugin), since finding people and keeping them motivated without money are tasks not to be taken likely.

But volunteers for content, etc are all great ideas which should be explored more.

  3. Hi Alexander, I'm really sorry about the problem.
Unfortunately I am not able to do this, but I really hope I can donate some huge money in the coming years.
Thank you so much. I hope you reach your goal.

Are you going to email people who are currently not using the site to give them the opportunity to contribute?

  5. Hmm, well, haven't thought about that yet. Was thinking about launching a newsletter or something soon, not sure what I would think of sending an email begging for money out-of-the-blue. But I'm sure some people would want to contribute based on principle, despite not utilizing the membership / website. Definitely will consider this. Also, thanks for signing up!

Hi, l'd also like the option to hide my "supporter" badge, because I believe we are all on the same boat and equal regardless of our financial situation. On the other hand, if somebody sees the "supporter" on somebody else's post, she or he can also click on the badge and think about supporting this effort financially himself or herself. And l want to highlight that anybody who takes time to kindly reply to other's post with words of encouragement and support, is a BIG supporter in my eyes. Personally l don't have the time to reply to others' posts very often, so supporting financially is the only thing I can do without losing too much time.

  7. We don't have any way to program this feature in (choosing to display flair or not) until we're financially afloat. I can refund your subscription and you can sign-up for the anonymous option if you prefer that. Also, as I said earlier, once we can get some help we'll work to make it a bit more discreet. Thanks for the support!

I believe that it is okay to be skeptical about all of this, but I would also like to mention that we aren't paying $10 a month for flair. We are paying to support nofap and its growth so that we can help more and more people in the future.

There is always going to be those people with money they want to contribute. I do it because I want to help. I could give too shits if I had a banner. I think it is very disrespectful to diss on something Alexander has worked so hard on. Even though it is just a test run.

There is no equality when it comes to the world. One person has more money than the other. Someone has a banner on their handle that you don't. Some is a different race than you. No one is equal to you, yet, we are able to treat others with equality. If you are jealous of the banners, I will have Alexander give you mine. As long as I am contributing to the forums both physically and monetarily, I am happy.

    Hi Alexander,

Unrelated: You probably know this already, but the donation button is still not functional. I would like to make a contribution when it's up and running again.

I can't contribute monthly, but I would like to contribute a lump sum every one in a while when I feel I can afford it.

My concern is that "nofap.org" will show up on my credit card or PayPal and I don't want to have to answer awkward questions if my wife or someone else sees that.

I don't know what shows up now, but something like "MusicRUs" or "Intex International" would be much easier to explain than Nofap.org

Or maybe you should just tell your wife bub. If she loves you, she will accept you.

  12. I know some people are concerned that the badges will create different cliches on the forum, one for supports and another for non-supporters. But I'm on another forum that did this several years ago, and honestly nobody treats you different if you are a non-supporter or not. It's the quality of your content that counts and builds your reputation, not if you give money or not. Also, there are plenty of ways to support this forum even if you cannot give money. I hope nobody will feel better or worse about you if you give money or don't. I won't, at least.

  13. Thanks for the support. We're up to 34 units now, which definitely helps offset the costs. To be honest, I was feeling pretty discouraged earlier, but the subscriptions keep trickling in. Now I think this campaign is a long-term thing, not a short term 24-hour campaign, and hopefully the numbers will go up over the following week.

I'll be increasing incentives to subscribe. Check the OP for more information. Not sure if we'll reach our fundraising goal, but I'm going to remain positive and we'll see what happens over the week.

To those who expressed support and/or subscribed, I cannot thank you enough. I feel like a lost explorer inside of a dark cavernous cave. You're like stumbling across other travelers with torches, and together we'll amass light and prevail. This isn't just regarding financial stuff, but really the messages that you've been sending. It has been very touching.

I feel you are going from one extreme to the next.
From having a donate button noone knew about and that is malfunctioning to asking for major commitments with daily messages and an alert taking up half of the page.

I still support it, as having the community fund the site is a lot better than being dependent on advertisers/other groups.
However I think there should be some middle ground, since the development costs are a one time thing.

  15. I get what you're saying. At the same time, extreme measures have to be taken. For me, this didn't come out of nowhere. I've been paying a lot of money for years into this passion project. My income isn't where it used to be and I simply cannot afford to bear all of the costs anymore. This took me a while to realize, and once I did, the situation became more and more clear that an immediate change needs to happen. The sooner the better.

I have worked on some fundraising efforts in the past and I do know that persistence is necessary to reach goals. I don't see the daily alerts as being too extreme. And while the banner is obnoxious, it is dismissable and something that countless websites, including Wikipedia, have done in the past. What would you suggest be done differently?

Yes, development costs are a one-time thing, but in an ideal world there would be on-going development to improve the website. Also, things happen, unexpected things that require somebody to jump in and fix stuff. Like whenever the porn spammer came onto the board, I had to spend money to prevent them from flooding porn images. Then they started uploading porn avatars, so I had to spend money and time to fix that. Our site has hacking attempts relatively often which sucks and feels like such a waste of time to deal with. Who knows whenever the porn industry or somebody decides to DDOS us - we have to be prepared for that, being somewhat of a "lightning rod" for press attention.

I do understand where you are coming from though. This definitely was sudden.

Another idea would be to introduce a new badge called "NoFap Junior Supporter" with a monthly donation from $2 to $5. Every little helps, right? There are many users who want to support NoFap, but for whatever reason cannot afford $10 a month. Give them a chance to contribute.

    Hi Alexander,

I'd love to do this, but the issue for me is not cost, it's secrecy. I'm currently supported by my husband, and although I have some discrepancy around cash, all electronic transactions come under scrutiny. Do you have a "front" for nofap or something? Less suspicious on the accounts? Even PayPal says nofap (of course) but I do not want to lead my husband here.

Thanks in advance for any reply - and thank you also for this place.

His intention is not to divide the forum, but to bring it together in times of duress. Those who donate are no better than those who don't. I don't have a job right now and can't afford the 10 USD, but do I feel inferior to everyone who can? No. I feel proud and thankful that people are contributing to a cause I support wholeheartedly. The only way the forum would be split between "the winners" and "the losers", or "the rich" and "the poor", is if you look at it that way. That is in no way fact and I don't think many would agree with you. It isn't a competition. I doubt that people will face depression and tension just because they can't contribute to something that isn't required. Alexander isn't doling out access to the forum based on your donation status, it's an optional thing to help the community to become better - to help more people! He isn't responsible for the amount of money someone in India makes per month, he's only asking those who can give.

No one will be looked down upon because they can't donate. I think we all understand that many people in other countries, and even people in the US who need every cent, can't afford it. If you want to donate a smaller amount (think shitty meal with one drink), you can do it through the donate page. He added forum perks simply as an incentive to sign up, not as a way to seclude donators off from regular members. No one would sign up for premium if premium just meant "I donated 10 USD".

I, for one, am excited by Alexander's initiative. He needs the help. We can dilly dally around all night long but in the end, forums don't run on the members' good will. If this is what it takes to keep potentially triggering ads off the forums, I am all for it.

  19. Alexander after all the selfless work that you have done in making this wonderful place for people to find the tools to make their dreams a reality it is an honor and privilege for us to be given the chance to give back both in financial support and emotional support. You have given so much and I can not thank you enough for all the good that you have done and the caring that you have shown in a world where most people just think of them selves. Like @M L I too wish to help by either giving some money in a one time donation or going premium but as I still live with my folks and my dad sees all the expenses, this combined with the money problems from moving will require me to weigh the question of finally telling my folks about my porn problem.

But these are things I will have sort out my self, the main thing is that I want you to know what a profound difference you have made in my life. We sometimes forget that there are real life Heroes out there in the world and in my book you are one of them for sure.
