Maybe I should and I probably will one day, but that doesn't solve the current problem that I won't contribute the way things currently are. And I suspect there are at least one or two others who feel the same way.

I would rather see it as a prolonged effort instead of a struggle to get people to all sign up at once.
Have a sticky thread explaining that NoFap needs funds and a donate button on the main forum page taking up 5-10% space. If that is not enough, you could still start fundraising more directly for a defined goal.

But really, I don't expect you to stop everything when it is already working. And I understand where you are coming from as well.
Also I didn't notice the alerts are dismissable .. so many features.

I respect taking up lots of space. Wikipedia has done it, and the pesterings cease after a time. Personally I'm quite averse to subscriptions, though.

Another suggestion, re: anonymity topic. Why not put up an address where you can accept money orders? You can set whatever proviso you need to, like money order contributions cannot be linked to an account, should only be over $25 for costs, etc. Just deposit them once a month to cut down overhear of the financial clerk's time. Not sure there is a better solution. Some members have legit legal reasons to want anonymity. For me, it's just more of a preference thing.

I don't like the "forever" typed into stone of forum text someone searching my name and seeing a place I've turned to help. It would be like TMZ putting someone's pychologist tapes on youtube. I don't want publicity and that's why I've never gone into the limelight. Databases do get hacked, so I want no link from personal life to online life, not here, not anywhere. Some people on here probably don't realize how easy it would be to connect several dots and actually figure out their real life info. Being Christian, a similar concept might be that God forgets our sin when we repent. But, the Internet never forgets, and it's unnatural. NoFap should be a place where burdens can be cast off, but not chained to us even worse than before. Call me illogical and thinking of slim chances all you want, but I thought it better to explain my choice, based on experience.

sidebar: Frankly, I wish the nofap site would guarantee no IP address logging. Various people keep saying they're worried about getting caught up in some unwarranted law enforcement. Well, who's to say an agent of come agency (U.S.) isn't doing that already, monitoring and gathering and tracking? Hint: they probably are. Sure it takes a court order for some things, but why wouldn't they be doing that? A couple well-placed court orders that string things together via IP address allotments from ISPs can tell a fairly complete story about what someone does online. It's basically not safe to say things online unless you're anonymizing with Tor and using proxy servers. Maybe someone techie can start a thread about how to successfully use NoFap anonymously.

p.s. @alexander this is one reason you get mad props respect for putting /yourself/ out there as a lightning rod. I simply don't think it's my mission in life. I'd like to help support things, but risking exchanging a career for public scorn is not on my agenda, and likely not something many will volunteer.

  4. Thanks for all of the support! We're up to 43 units, which is an awesome start for only a day and a half of "campaigning". I have high hopes that we'll be able to reach 100 and eventually 150 to offset expenses.

I decided to reduce the "initial goal" to 100 because it just seems way more attainable. Once we reach that goal, I'll ramp down the campaign a bit and hopefully over the next month or so we'll be able to get 50 more.

Once we reach 100 people or so, I'll ramp is down to shoot for the remaining 50. This will be a prolonged effort after this initial heavier launch. Understand where you're coming from and will keep that in mind for future stuff (not even referring only to financial stuff, but any new features).

Thank you very much. That means a lot.

    Thank you so much.

Thanks for the support, @Gentleman WriterDreamer.

I'll look into setting up some kind of more discreet way to support NoFap. Thanks for the suggestion and interest.

Will think about this. Thanks for the suggestion and your interest.

    Thanks so much!

Thanks for this feedback. To be transparent, the board software logs IP addresses. The moderation team can use tools to link related accounts together through IP addresses. They come in handy whenever we are being attacked by trolls posting pornography and without the ability to ban by IP address, we would be highly susceptible to porn trolls creating multiple accounts.

With that being said, I am happy to work with you to ensure you and others who are concerned can connect to NoFap using TOR. Problem is many trolls use TOR as well so a number of exit node IPs are already banned. I'll think about this and am open to ideas.

Regarding completely anonymous donations, I'm not sure if the mailed donation amount would even pay for the PO box, but I might be willing to give it a shot to see what happens. Thanks again!

  5. I totally understand the need for donations, but furthermore, the fact that you've been running the site from your own pocket, for the past god knows how long without requesting donations is AMAZING. Honestly, I haven't been on here for long (last November), but NoFap has helped me curb my addiction, before it got too out of hand. From being a nervous, shamed boy, I feel like I've grown into a mature adult, thanks to you, the forum, and all of your supporters, moderators, and the community!
As I lack an online monetary prescience, I would be more than happy to donate via an address (as suggested by vxlccm); if you do set it up, feel free to give an estimate of what it'd need, to make the donation worthwhile :). live in the UK, and none of my family knows, but I'd be more than happy to send da monies' over.

Your work is a massive testament to your own success, kindness, and emphasises the massive heart you have, helping others! Bless you sir!

Edit: AHAHAHA! There's a postal address now! As soon as I get a chance, to go to an exchange, I'll send da monies! Awesome!!

I'm a bit paranoid about being at nofap, I couldn't have been this open if there was a realistic chance that someone could link my nick account here. Being married, having children and a pretty good job don't go well together with PMO addiction and I don't want to lose any of those.

How about allowing something like paysafecard for way more anonymous donations? That would work at least for me.

This is possible! I set up a $2 recurring transfer using PayPal last night! Though it took me a while to figure out how to do it, and I can't remember for the life of me what I did. It was some combination of NoFap.com/donate, [email protected] and blind clicking wherever. But it is possible.

That's interesting. I haven't seen how to donate at all, perhaps that's why it barely gets used, many people that use the site don't even see it?

I think there are a lot of people like me who are not in a position to make a monthly commitment at the moment but who greatly value the service and would like to contribute as and when we're able. Is there a way of putting a donate button on the homepage perhaps ?

Thank you for all your hardwork Alexander. I can feel the humility in your writing and know you have 'been there'. On the road that many of us are treading now to full recovery, actually beyond recovery into a new fulfilling way of life!

Thanks for your amazing commitment, alexander. NoFap has had a big impact on me and I do plan to donate or subscribe soon. I have a couple suggestions, as well.

    1. Under the "Upgrade" link in the forum navigation, add two subcategories: "Subscribe" and "Donate". (I think these could both be top-level links but I get why you might not want to do that) Subscribe would be the default but Donate would be there as an option as well. I know you prefer the subscription method, even if people immediately unsubscribe, but there are people who will see the Upgrade options and won't be comfortable with subscribing. Yes, even though you make it clear in this thread that you can unsubscribe immediately, it will be enough of a deterrent to some. Some people don't bother to read forum notices and as you can see by the responses in this thread, there are people who are willing to donate but not subscribe. So base your financial plans for NoFap on the subscriptions and think of the donations as an occasional helping hand.
    2. Add a donate link to the main top navigation of the website. You can put it off to the right, separate from the other links or make the letters in grey so it doesn't stand out at much. I can't speak for everyone but I wouldn't find that offensive or intrusive. It would be an easy way to let people know that you accept donations. I really appreciate that you don't want to be obnoxious about asking for money but you've decided to ask for help so it makes sense (to me) to make the donate link easier to find. You say that you've only been getting about one donation a month previously but I'll bet that the majority of the people who see the site never see the current donate link. While I'm on the subject, I think the donate page is well done. You give reasons that money is accepted but you don't overload them with information. It could use a "read more" link for those who want more details, though, that links to a forum post with a longer message from you.

Hello Alexander, I'm really pleased you're doing this fund-raising appeal. It's the key to sustaining NoFap. I've been contributing through PayPal since July 2014, can I have a "NoFap Supporter" badge too? bw Chas

  16. Just quoting a few Fapstronauts who asked for more a anonymous way to subscribe. We have an address now. If you put your NoFap username somewhere in the envelope, we can apply any amount towards however many months.

Thanks for the interest and other thoughts in this thread. Thank you for the overwhelming support (not talking about financial support here). Your messages mean the world to me.

Do you mean "distress" rather than "duress" in your signature? Masturbation is certainly one activity I do not think duress is likely to apply to.

Anyway: first, would you be able to list subscription amounts for currencies other than USD? I don't know what % of users are from the US but I like to imagine that our problem is a global one.

I am from the UK, and $10 is £6.50, which brings me to my second point: this is simply too much. That's a Netlifx or Spotify subscription, or 1/3 of a cheap gym membership, and you get almost nothing for it. There are many, many charities that ask for £1 or £2 per month, and fight in more significant ways for more dire situations than this website for people with poor self control. Now I think NoFap is an important choice for many people, one that can significantly improve their lives, and there do need to be websites that bring people together to help them achieve their goal, and educate them realistically on the effects of masturbation and pornography, and spread the word, but PMO is only one problem amongst many and if I donated to every website that was helpful to me or every supportive community I found online I would have no money left each month for rent.

There is also the concern that this is a standing order, and money will leave my account each month without further approval. If I leave NoFap in the future and forget I subscribed to it, I could lose tens or hundreds or pounds before I next go over my statement — I'm pretty lazy about checking that sort of thing, but I'm sure a lot of other people are too and would rather not commit to giving away money regularly on this basis!

Realistically, I would donate £0.50 a month, and that is assuming I get that banner under my username and monthly email reminders that I just gave away 50p for nothing. I live on a budget and many people I'm sure have far more money to burn pointlessly than I do, but I find it hard to imagine many people who would happily in their right mind donate more than £1/month. Alternatively, I would donate maybe £10 without commitment for a lifelong supporter banner and the pride of having done a nice thing and the leisure of never having to think about it again.

  19. Hi nondescript:
I am so sorry you think that this site is worth just 1 pound per month.
You are probably not so worried about your porn addiction or you are not addicted at all (which I find great).
I have been suffering a lot for years (including depression and ED) without even knowing the reason.
One month ago I saw by chance Gary Wilson's TED TALK, and I realized that I was a severe porn addict. I researched and learned about NoFap, and this has changed my life.
I am just in my 21st day, and I could have sex with my wife without having Viagra, as I have not for years.
I am far from recovery, but thanks to Alexander and his site I can cope with my daily fight, and every day I am feeling better and more confident. God Bless you Alexander, what you are doing is amazing.
I have just became a Premium member, because we need to help this good cause.
