Is it normal for a reboot to zigzag like this?

I've been rebooting for almost 17 months now. I noticed tremendous improvements in July and August: my depression was finally lifting, my sleep was improving, and a lot of my withdrawal-related physical ailments were beginning to disappear. But just in the last few weeks, it's like I've fallen back down the hill because all those aforementioned problems have suddenly come back with a vengeance! I've heard people on here say that recovery isn't linear and that rebooting is going to be more like peaks and valleys than a straight road. Is this normal after almost a year and a half?! It was such a morale booster to be rewarded with those benefits for a few months, and now I feel so discouraged because it all disappeared.

    Hey,

I've been rebooting from PIED for the last 15-16 months, and I can say you're spot on when you say a reboot is not linear. The formula for recovery is 'one step forward, two steps back'. There will be days where you will feel great, and days where you feel as if you have slipped and are doing something wrong. This is normal. The important thing is to KEEP GOING.

I am 127 days into a hard mode reboot, and on Day 77 I had 70% strong morning wood, whereas Day 93 I only had 30% morning wood. The bad days get better as do the good days. Continue abstaining from artificial stimulation where you can. Be warned, as you get further along in your streak, if recovering correctly, you will find that your general energy increases gradually. As your energy increases, be careful you will slip back into old negative habits, be extra vigilant.

    Good luck

Thanks for the encouragement! Yeah, I have noticed the gradual increases in energy, which is also something that has ups and downs throughout my reboot. I probably seem like I'm being kind of bitchy about this whole thing lol, but the lack of stability just makes it feel discouraging sometimes. You feel like you've climbed five rungs up the ladder one month, and the next month it feels like you got knocked down three rungs.

I've only had four relapses throughout the course of my 17-month reboot, but they weren't severe relapses, and they never turned into binges. Those times that I did relapse, it was just a one-time slip-up where I'd have a quick PMO, regret it, and immediately get back on track. So, in the grand scheme of things, I haven't had too many setbacks. This 57-day streak that I'm currently on is probably the easiest streak I've had so far, and the urges are considerably easier to control compared to when I first started NoFap.
