Is it the P or the M?

Discussion in 'Porn Addiction' started by Reverent, Aug 9, 2018.

Is Porn fueling you to Masturbate or is your need to Masturbate compelling you to seek Porn?

  1. Porn leads me to M

  2. Masturbation drives me to P

  3. Something other

After I dissected my addiction I had to take a hard look at this question to see what was the root cause of my habitual compulsions.

I always assumed P made me M, or why else would I be watching it? However it wasn't until I killed my old friend of 30 yrs (Masturbation) that I saw who was controlling who. For me, Remove M, almost no desire for P.

They both feed off each other. That's why I think in a reboot, both must die.

  2. I think at first it's really vital to quit both P and M, i did well over 90 days 3 years ago but that was due to other reasons and it was before i had discovered NOFAP. I have realised and accepted that from time to time i need a release of sexual tension...i am only human. However these days I wont go anywhere near porn. I live alone so i don't have the option of having sex with a real woman so i just meditate on it and it's over and done with in a couple of minutes. This is about 2-3 times in a month which is a lot better than every day and then 14 hours over the weekend! i treat my body and my mind with a lot more respect than i used to.

I think porn fuels masturbation in the same way that nitrous oxide fuels a drag racing car....it doesn't need Nitrous Oxide to run but when you put it in the tank it flies like a beast.

I think both porn and masturbation have a tendency to feed off of each other.
Masturbation provides psychological and chemical reinforcement for compulsive porn usage. Every time you masturbate while watching porn, you're rewarding your porn usage, reinforcing that sort of behavior.
Porn provides variety and sexual stimulation, which just increases the risk of masturbation.

When I originally quit using porn, I had a difficult time quitting masturbation as well. However, masturbating without porn never led me back into watching porn again. I've also seen some users on the other side of that spectrum. They are able to quit masturbating, but they still watch porn compulsively.

So, I think everyone is a little different, but I think both porn and masturbation feed off one another.

    For me it's definitely porn.

  7. I guess the need to ejaculate led me to porn at first. But now the avialabitly of porn any time causes me to masturbate too much for my own good.
I agree with thorswrath32 that if you had no chance of having sex an occasional MO is not the worst thing you could do.
Right now I do have a partner to have sex with, although not as often as I would like . But I'm old and if I MO too often I can't perform when it counts.

Absolutely dead on, they feed off each other. They're both addictive and both give crazy dopamine rushes so the natural addict instinct is to do/have both. That's why I feel just cutting off P doesn't really do anything, the addiction goes beyond just that so continuing to M is still feeding it. We're just a subset of sex addicts when it comes down to it.

I agree with you, they definitely feed on each other.

  10. They may feed each other.

But there's a hierarchy: every porn user masturbates, but not every masturbator uses porn. So for me this makes clear that first comes masturbation. Porn may add, but it mustn't.

After 1 year of trial and error, I finally understood how things go.
When you have porn addiction, it fuels with masturbation. That's incredibly true.
So, when you need to take out porn, you have to go full NoFap, because you need to break the chain.
After a whole cycle of rebooting, you can re-allow masturbation in your life.
I saw that masturbation without porn did not reduce my willing to find a partner. Masturbation with porn, instead, hell yes did. And, once I had relapsed back into porn, I felt much more urge to masturbate than normally.
In a normal situation, it is porn that fuels masturbation.
