I'm only just learning about the ramifications of addiction and dopamine.

My question is: is porn addiction worse than other addictions, like, say, using your cell phone, exercise, video gaming, biting your fingernails, etc.? Don't those cause the same dopamine rush that rewire and damage the brain?

I feel as though everyone is addicted to something, even if it's just checking their phone, drinking coffee, watching television, work, making money, a certain food, something. How are their brains not just as bad off as a porn addict?

  2. I'm sure you'll get a million opinions on this one. I suppose it depends on the person, and you'd need to factor in a variety of things such as age, gender, length of addiction, and other physical and psychological factors. Generalizing is easy, but it's unfair. We both can get colds. Mine hangs on for weeks, yours is gone in three days. No one single factor explains why.
An addiction is an addiction. I have learned that understanding the addictive personality and addictions in general helpful to my own recovery.
I know one thing, no matter what someone's addiction is, I am a lot more sympathetic to them than I used to be. So which is worse? Not sure there is a final answer.

Some people would argue that porn is no worse than other stuff. One thing I have found is that porn can eat away at my soul. When at it's worst I have felt terribly guilty and ashamed 24/7.
I guess it depends how often and what you are looking at and how close it is to your moral compass. If it's something that seems wrong but you watch it anyway - that can fuck you up.

There's scientific evidence that porn consumption (read: addiction) can shrink part of the brain's striatum (reward center) and frontal lobes. Biting one's fingernails too often or even using your cell phone more than you should is most likely not going to have such a profound effect. The only other addictions that cause brain shrinkage are substance addictions, substances which ultimately work on the same neurotransmitters involved in porn addiction. These same neurotransmitters targeted by hard drugs like cocaine are released in extreme quantities when porn is being consumed. For this simple reason porn addiction should never be underestimated. Porn is an artificial stimulus that can resemble how e.g. cocaine works in terms of neurochemical activity, but of course the damage porn can cause will depend on many different factors, addiction needs to be present. The question is, when is someone addicted to porn? Fapping to porn once isn't going to cause addiction related changes in the brain, doing it twice still isn't going to have a detrimental effect. Repitition of use is one of the biggest things that is going to cause an imbalance in the nervous system. Imo daily or weekly sessions of masturbation to porn will mean addiction and will cause detrimental effects in the long run (years of practicing this habit).
