When I look at my life, I see a problem that is more broad than just internet porn. It's high speed internet in general. My mind has become trained to be blasted with content at all times. I come home from class, turn on the TV, open up my laptop, and while that is loading I browse on my phone. Social media (instagram, twitter, reddit) is trending in a way that users are being provided with a ton of information in a vast quantity of short titles, small pictures, and quick sentences. All of this serves to overstimulate the brain. I can see in myself that this has led to a shorter attention span and a seemingly constant need for some sort of stimulation. When I can't get my fix on the internet, I turn to weed and alcohol to make sure my mind is always thinking or feeling something different. Here in 2015 its no longer ok to be bored. All this fiending for stimulation has left me anxious, depressed, and antisocial despite the fact that I'm getting constant updates on other people's lives. I think that this can all be related to my porn addiction. Sometimes its not enough to just lay in bed and think about 1 girl. Sometimes I need to be blasted with nudity that not even the biggest orgy could match. This is why in addition to rebooting, I am also abstaining from pot smoking and cutting my smart phone usage and TV time way back to a more sustainable level. If this post has resonated with you in any way, I encourage you to do the same.

I definitely agree about general internet addiction. For my reboot, I am intentionally using Kindle and real books more often for studying/learning purposes. I have noticed that my style of web learning tends to mimic pornographic searches in a somewhat disconcerting manner. I definitely agree that I should be able to lay in bed and think about one girl, but my past porn habits were nothing like this and my mind would want to jump all over the place. So many people say that fantasy is just like porn, but I have to disagree. It 'should' be different much like reading a real book is different than browsing websites. Very good post.

  3. This is the reason why one of my biggest recommendations is to get outside and feel the earth again. We have lost touch with nature, there is no porn or screen or connection in nature. Get back to it. Put your bare feet in soil and lay on some grass, breathe.

Snap! :p I haven't had a TV for over six years. I haven't played a computer game for years and even then it was just golf, snooker and cricket on PS2, lol. I virtually never drink alcohol and I have never smoked or taken non prescription drugs. There is a relentless assault on our senses, our bodies and minds and I try to compensate by keeping my life simple. My biggest activity for two years has been colouring in with colouring pencils. It is so 'undigital' and so relaxing.

I go hiking a lot and try to spend as much time outside as possible. Lately I've just been trying to embrace silence and calmness. I'm trying to clear my head out by reducing the amount of distraction as well as reducing things that are likely to mess with brain chemistry.

Part of my problem is being a student who grew up in the college town where I currently study. I grew up surrounded by a culture of drinking and drugs and partying. It seems like the only way to socialize on the weekends is to find out where the party's at or who's chillin with a bong somewhere. This weekend there is a going away party for my friend who is joining the navy. I'll definitely be there but I'm gonna try to drink as little as possible. I'm also staying away from weed simply by not buying anymore, which is also difficult because, again being a college town, it seems like as soon as i run out theres always someone whose got a great deal on a cut

You are right of course, there is a lot of stuff we need to quit, passive entertaiment in general and also facebook and other pointless sites.

I would rekommend starting to write if you have time, it will most likely have a positive effect on your mental performance and it is also very fun.

Yes, this is what's know as instant gratification. Our brains now want to be entertained constantly - and entertained the moment they feel like being entertained! That last part is very important. Not only do we seek out forms of gratification, but we want it right away. This has lead to a great many problems in our society.
    • Extreme debt (credit cards, dodgy loans etc) so people can buy what they want right away
    • Our obsession with social media (knowing what people are up to right away, without having to make an effort to ask them)
    • Obsession with high-speed internet. Why? So that you can get whatever content you want faster. Sure this is great when used wisely, but has the many downfalls you've mentioned already (pornography, TV shows, movies, mind-numbing Youtube videos, video games, the list could go on)
    • People rushing into sexual relationships without first building something deeper with the other person
NoFap targets one of the most damaging areas of our desire to be instantly gratified. But don't forget that there are many other areas that could use some attention too.
