Any musical recommendations on lyrics from artists that speak to you and addiction or society in general?

I've been listening to some Macklemore & Ryan Lewis songs lately and I forgot how powerful some of his lyrics are (usually relating to addiction and/or society at large). Amazing how such clear thoughts can come from our minds when it's sober or healthier than usual (as he struggles with addiction as well).

Not to get too conspiratorial, but I think us men have the power to change the world for the better. I feel inspired by these lyrics.

Some of the songs I've been listening to by this artist:

A wake (about addiction and society)

Light Tunnels (about tv, media and business in Hollywood)

Kevin (about addiction and the pharmaceutical industry)

Need to Know (about secrecy)

St. Ides (I think this one is about being melancholic and alcoholism)

Heroes (about bad influences particularly in the youth)

Faithful (about thoughts and torment behind urges and relapses)

You could try a album from Papa Roach called F.E.A.R. That album mostly deals with his personal issues regarding multiple addictions. Jacoby Shadix was a walking addiction by the way. He got healed in the last 15 years alot.
Thanks! I'll definitely check it out.

Just listened to the album. Jacoby is strong! Him recognizing what his addictions took away from him and standing up to it is inspiring. After a second listen, the instrumentals will hit me harder. First listen for me is always unpredictable because I don't know where the melodies are going next haha, but I just listened to Devil again and I'm really liking that one. And now hope for the hopeless is playing again through my headphones as I'm typing this and that one is very good too. Pretty cool that this album (f.e.a.r.), came out today 8 years ago too.

Yeah, it is pretty good album and i am not a mega huge fan of them, but that album has some really good songs lyrically and musically.
Glad you liked it.

Here are some songs:

Happy to Be Here - Julian Baker
Illusion of Bliss - Alicia Keys
Sober - Demi Lovato
Addiction - Kanye West
Not Afraid - Eminem
New Rules - Dua Lipa
Just Another Thing - Maren Morris

The last two songs are about unhealthy relationships but the way they talk about the relationship it's as if it's an addiction.

I know sober by demi (great song and relatable), addiction by kanye (I'm a big kanye fan :D), not afraid by eminem and new rules by dua. I'll definitely check the other ones out. Thanks!

I wouldn't call these songs exactly inspiring,
But they provide some perspective into what addiction can do and turn you into.
All great songs!

"Heroin", "White Light/White Heat", "I'm Waiting For my Man" - Velvet Underground

"Mr. Brownstone", "The Garden" - Guns N' Roses

"Drug Me" - Dead Kennedys

"Snowblind" - Black Sabbath

"Ashes to Ashes", "Station to Station", "Fascination" - David Bowie

"Shine On You Crazy Diamond (All Parts)" - Pink Floyd

"Sister Morphine", "Brown Sugar" - The Rolling Stones

"Sober" - P!nk

"Deja Vu" - Eminem

Some great suggestions here.

White House Road--Tyler Childers (country/rock) Basically about dealing with life through sex, drugs and alxohol and the instability of it becoming your demise.

Love is the Deug --Rozy Music. Literally, being a sex addict.

Habits (Stay Hi) - Tove Lo. Using sex (and other bad habits) to stave off heartbreak/despair.

I'd also recommend Alice in Chains. Many of their songs feature or center on themes of addiction, most prominently their album Dirt. Both Layne Staley (less vocals) and Jerry Cantrell (supporting vocals/lead guitar) were heroin addicts. Jerry beat his, Layne didn't. Phenomenal album Desperation, anger, helplessness, the bliss of being high, loneliness--its all on that album. Great lyrics, awesome music and gut-pounding vocals.

Oh yeah, I know mr. brownstone, sober (underrated song!) and deja vu. I know of the other artists/bands on this list but never dove deep into their music so I'll check those other songs out!

Thanks! I listened to your recommendations. "Love is the drug" is very good and relatable. "White House Road" felt more like a glamorization of that lifestyle haha but maybe it's not. It's still a pretty good song though. I'm looking forward to listening to Alice in Chains. I know of that band but I never really checked out their music. I'm definitely going to check out Dirt.

Just listened to Dirt. Great album! From a musical standpoint, it's great. I'll listen to the lyrics more on my 2nd listen because I think I was too focused on the very good music and vocals on first listen. I'm familiar with the song "them bones" because it was part of a video game's soundtrack I used to play lol (GTA: San Andreas). 90's feel. I like the way the album ends with the song "would?" That chorus feels good!

Thosetwotracks are probably my Dave's but the whole album rocks.

”Whitehousw Rd” is definitely a glamorization kdthe “high” lifestyle I think the last verse acknowledged the invariable outcome

Not sure why but the lyrics to this song always stick out at me from In This Moment wonderful under rated band.

Violet Skies In This Moment

Deep inside your eyes it shows
You've been lost for too long
Out of touch
On the edge
I promise you will find a way
I found a pathway home
I'll carry you
You're not alone

Fozzy - Judas

3 Doors Down - Loser

Shinedown - Monsters

Pop Evil - Paranoid

These come to mind instantly. They describe my battle

Lots of good recommendations already. Eminem, especially more recently, has lots of songs about addiction/recovery.

Wanted to throw out the band “Icon for Hire.” They’re a rock band with some aspects of electronica and rap. The main theme in a lot of their songs is recovery from addiction. I believe the two founding members are a recovering alcoholic and a recovering cutter.

so many of their songs are about that, but Hope of Morning specifically comes to mind, to give you an example:

“When the hope of morning starts to fade in me,
I won’t dare let darkness have its way with me.
And the hope of morning makes me worth the fight.
I will not be giving in tonight.”

Want to talk about songs that hit home?
Andy mineo- Shame

Uh, I was thirteen the first time my momma caught me watching porn
She started screaming
She couldn't believe her last born
Was dabbling in something so destructive
I wish I could have said it was my last time, but nah, it wasn't
And the more I thought about it, the more I got bothered
These women I'm objectifying are somebody's daughters

This one hurts. Literally a song about his struggle with porn and the shame that cone with it-

What's wrong with me?
Am I defective?
I keep on making a mess
Why can't I ever get it together?
Soon people gon' find out
I'm not what they expected

And what happens when he got famous and people started digging and found out about him?

I know some people gon' be quick to throw stones
But I'll take all of those hits to know that you not alone
And after 28 years of life, I decided
Everybody's crooked, some just have a better job of hiding it.

Great song, it is hard to listen to, but it gets better in the end

Oh, how good does freedom taste
I hope they gon' give me the forgiveness
They gon' need one day
I pray
Jesus, He washes away of all my sin
