Masturbation and Religion

Discussion in 'Rebooting - Porn Addiction Recovery' started by onceaking, May 26, 2019.

  1. Your sinning with porn is a result of your free will and the Lord won't stop you. You have to make the decision on your own and then you can communicate it in a prayer.

Few weeks before Easter I promised to Jesus that I won't sin (PMO) during the Holy Week. On Palm Sunday I was already further in my development and fully submitted my life to the Lord in an obedience prayer. This was the day my NoPMO streak started with a 40 days long flatline. And then the whole train started rolling.

Well the full understanding of human reproduction was beyond the scientific grasp of the Israelites or the authors of old testament. Spermatoza wasnt observed until the 17th century and the ovum was formally discovered until 1827. Therefore superstitious belief and societal taboo in regards to semen guided the idea of the sin of Onan, rather than a scientific understanding.

Well, there's your problem right there: You find it hard to believe that religious people knew stuff before science figured it out - because God told them.

Please point to anywhere, in the any of the Abrahamic scriptures, where god tells people about the existence of the ovum?

You're right, it's not written there.
I'm Jewish. We believe that together with the written scripture, God gave Israel an oral tradition. And this oral tradition is much vaster than the 24 books of the Bible.

Because Moses killed King Og. Deuteronomy 3 if you're interested.

I used to think God spoke to me but now I just think it was just my imagination. I have trouble believing people when they say God tells them stuff. How can you know it was God telling you things and not you telling yourself that?

Also, I just think the kind of thinking that you won't get into the kingdom is not a good way to think about it. I would constantly get stressed out that I would go to hell if I P&M and that caused me to relapse even more. I really don't think YHWH cares so much about it. I think YHWH doesn't want us to hurt other people but the church makes us masturbating to be worse than it actually is.

I tend to find many Jews have a more intelligent approach to scripture than Christians. You being Jewish might explain why you know who King Og is, Christians tend to only Psalms, Proverbs and New Testament.

Okay. Where in the oral tradition or either the Babylonian or the Juresaleum talmud does god tell anyone about ovum?

  9. You know once you have the Holy Spirit. You can clearly tell what your own ideas are (free will) and what is coming from Him (His will). You recognize signs and "coincidences".

Originally I didn't plan for this. I was a heathen who got himself various self-help books (like the ones written by Roosh V), which turned out not leading to the happy and successful life as promised. Then at some point I figured out through the Internet and the YouTubes, that Christians must get at least something right. So I simply got their book, because even if you don't believe in the grand scheme, you can still follow the instructions and see if stuff falls into place. (It does, you don't have to know the Lord to please Him.)

My original plan didn't really work, because the Lord revealed Himself to me on the first day I opened the Bible (and just read a little bit of Genesis) and on the next day I woke up as a believer. Because I was completely on my own, various topics like sin (PMO), parish and baptism came out of the blue, to my own surprise. I didn't have sin on my radar at all, it's a completely foreign concept for a heathen without any religious teaching. Before I submitted my life to God this year, I had a year long dispute, because my free will didn't really wanted to fall in line with His and getting rid of PMO was especially hard...

Don't get hung up on the words. There is a clear distinct turnaround point in my life, where I made a choice, then things fell into place, prayers got answered and I got confirmation, that I interpreted God's will correctly and ended up exactly where the Lords wants me. He got also rid of some very nasty demons. There is no doubt.

Sin is separating you from God. Each time you PMO you veer away from the Lord. This is not about what happens after your death, it immediately affects your life on earth.

Look, I don't know the Talmud by heart. It would take me a while to try to find a source. I also may not find a source. The Talmud isn't the only part of the Oral tradition. Like I said, it's vast. I'm willing to say that there may not even be a specific reference to an ovum.
With that being said, that doesn't necessarily mean that people didn't know a thing or two about the reproductive system. If we go back to your question about Onan, it specifically says that he wasted/destroyed his seed, or "zerah" in Hebrew. If it were called so way back then, then obviously they knew that seed is part of the reproductive system. So I'm not so sure what you meant by his sin being "superstitious" - it was quite clear that he preferred to waste his seed than for it to develop into a son that would legally, according to common law at the time, be considered his dead brother's heir.

That’s pretty much it then. I thought that at least I didn’t masturbate it wasn’t that bad. I went the first five months no problem and not watching but in the last two months at least five lapses where I watched porn. I guess get a blocker in my phone or read it in for a flip phone ...

Well, we approach this from different angles since I grew up in the church. I've seen enough and have had about of the church. For the most part, I've found the Holy Spirit to be creepy. The Holy Spirit seems to bring about ridiculous nonsense like people screaming and rolling about on the floor. I've been in charismatic churches and there's so much of what goes on is batshit crazy.

Personally, I've had more help from neuroscience about understanding my addiction than from the church.

  13. I'm not charismatic at all. I just sometimes have a good connection with the Spirit and get advice, suggestions and ideas from Him. Not now though, currently I'm just a normal faithful Christian.

I am Muslim, and my religion has been my utmost motivator. Even with the so many short streaks I have had back then, and especially the current one. My longest ever and will continue being long for the rest of my life.
