First of all, tiredness is one of my biggest triggers. If I am tired, lonely, and cannot sleep, then my temptation soars. In the past, I have given into temptation when I could not sleep at night. There is another issue, though. Sometimes I start masturbating while still asleep. Usually, I wake up in time to stop, but sometimes that is not the case. I read an article about sexsomnia and how it impacts up to 7% of the population.

Does anyone have any advise or insight about this? I completely do not want to masturbate at this point, and sleep masturbation is getting in the way of my retention plan. For me, it does not go against my goals, but it is not exactly something that I want to keep happening; if that makes any sense. Let's put it this way: I push myself excessively hard not to masturbate when I am tempted to, and then I wake up masturbating without having any intentions of doing so. So, advise or insight, anyone?

  2. Wow, I was just commenting on this in a post I made today. My wife and I had a massive argument because she told me I was masturbating in bed when she was asleep. She told me it had happened before. I thought she was mistaken and pointed to a lack of release as to why.
Now you've given me a term and I'm funnily feeling a bit better about that whole episode.
I'm not sure what you can do to stop this happening, other than a bit of research into some of the possible causes. But also, I absolutely wouldn't consider this in way against your goals. If this is happening subconsciously, how could you possibly hold yourself accountable for it.
Sure there are others with better insight into this than me, who honestly, until you posted it, just thought it was something my wife had made up.

Lately, I remember it when it happens to me.

I once thought that it was commonly accepted one could masturbate accidentally. I remember being corrected as a teenager: "If you wake up in the middle of the night and want to masturbate, it isn't accidental." Well, for 7% of people, it turns out, it is--provided you never actually woke up. I thought my family made it up, too, lol.

I think this may have happened to me once before, a long time ago. I woke up to what I thought was a wet dream except this time my hand was down my pants and it looked for all the world like I had done it consciously. I didn't count it as a relapse because I was asleep when it happened, but it was confusing. The only advice I can give is to try and keep a regular sleep cycle where you go to sleep early and wake up early, getting out of bed as soon as you wake up to avoid falling back to sleep. I did this originally to try and stop sleep paralysis but it seems to work for nocturnal emissions too to a certain extent.

The act of M during sleep is a symptom of sexsomnia (acting out sexually during non-REM sleep). If I ever did pelvic thrusts during sleep, I did not know it. Usually, it is a full on slimy orgasm when I M during sleep (a very unintentional, aggravating one that I wake up immediately after). I don't know whether you're experiencing it or not. There will likely be a little chafing unless if you sleep-applied some lubricant. If there is no chafing, it's probably just a very productive wet dream. Just a thought, because it may also be a combination of the two.

    Thanks.
As a student, my sleep schedule is crazy. I am always going and never have a break. Add to it the challenge of quitting PMO, finding friends, looking for "the one," working a job... Yeah, I don't count it as a reset/relapse either. It is probably just a symptom of quitting M after years of frequent indulgence therein. My conscious mind is on board with quitting, but my body/subconscious must be acting out.

    I'm struggling with this, lately.

I am still tempted to M and turn on P. Last night, I dreamed about P, but I did not watch any. I made sure to check the history on my phone. There has got to be something that will wake me up when I go to do this.

Earlier this year, I tried to leave the youtube app open on an anti-porn prayer and condition myself to play it to wake myself up. What I wound up doing was turning on P while still half-asleep instead of letting the prayer do its thing. Maybe, now that I am 73 days without porn, I should try the anti-porn prayer, again. One might imagine, I really don't want to relapse after 73 days-which I have done before. I'm sure if I had a roommate, he would wake me up. Being alone is almost a worse trigger than tiredness.

With all that being said, I know I can't control what I do asleep, but it still leaves me feeling guilty. Also, what if I "wake up and finish?" That would be a reset, and I don't want to foolishly through my hard work out the window. Thanks, everyone for hearing me out on this. Does anyone else have similar experiences? What do you think about using the anti-porn prayer?

Its good to make incremental steps to freedom. If the prayer thing works go for it. However what do you think about watching porn vs playing it in your head? Is there a difference because ones body is still being aroused by the porn. Which could lead to a wet dream, sexual content in dreams or physical M.

I dream about P a lot. I don't think about it much while awake, though. You, @Salada, may be on to something. Still, I don't know what to do about constantly dreaming about P. The prayer thing most definitely did not work, again.

Also, I don't play porn in my head, at least not while awake. If one plays porn in their head, then that is equally as damaging as watching it. But when I wake up after masturbating, my thoughts are overcome with porn. I'm disgusted by it, though. I think about how much I really care about women and want to get to know one. I pray. I try not to worry about the sexsomnia. It keeps coming back, though, and it is irritating.

    Thanks for your input.

The prayer video did not work. The next idea was to have a cold shower and exercise immediately before bed.

One thing that works virtually without fail is sleep medicine. I cannot do that every night, though. I also do not have trouble sleeping other than the M problem. I wonder why the sleep medicine works, though? That's very peculiar...

I have figured out that the real problem is that porn plays in my head rampantly immediately after I exit REM sleep. This leads to sexsomnia immediately before I wake up. What I am trying now is to surround my bed with encouraging messages and Bible verses so that I will hopefully remember them and wake up quicker. For this past night, it worked!

The encouraging messages and Bible verses are working. I started to M during sleep and I woke up when I though about messing up the paper with the message on it. So, thanks everyone for your help!

Sleep tight, and don't let the bed bugs bite!!!

During the first month of my current 90 day reboot, I would wake up to find my hand gripped down there in the act of M, semi asleep. I agree that it was happening mostly because right before waking up my imagination was going wild with previous P that I had watched and/or experiences I had.

I made a mental note to expand that into my parameters for my NoFap goals and voila, I stopped waking up with my hand down my pjs.

Just like the subconscious can be programmed, it can be deprogrammed & reprogrammed by feeding it new goals and direction that can work for you while you sleep.

Good luck with your reboot. You can do it!

It's cool to hear that someone else went through this. I admit that I do not want to make this part of my goals. The scripture notes on the floor beside my bed are working, so far. Not even my subconscious mind would feel comfortable with getting bodily fluids all over the encouraging notes. One of the notes even says that if I hit it, it will be counted as a reset! At 49 days, I do not want to hit that note, for sure!

Yeah I've been witnessing this for the past month or two. I don't know what is it or how it causes it (considering Im one test porn free). It happened today, twice woke up back to my conscience and stopped it. It's probably the reason I had a wet dream today. I did have some sexual thoughts before bed but I didn't cave in to it.

For me, the cause is that porn would race through my mind when I was getting ready to leave REM sleep. It's important to note that sleep masturbation occurs in non-REM sleep. It's been over a week since this happened to me, thank goodness. Good luck to you!

This problem is getting better. One issue is that I wake up with my thoughts racing, now, rather than wake up masturbating. My skin was even crawling, this morning. That has never happened, that I'm aware of. I had problems with sleepwalking as a child. Does anyone have similar experiences or know what's going on?

Today I can count on one hand(all my five fingers) amount of times this has happened AGAIN. And to answer your question above, I never had a trouble with sleep walking.

Yes, it has happened to me a few more times, too. I guess most people don't have trouble with sleep walking. For me me it is not of medical concern, but it may be an underlying cause of masturbating in sleep.

Unfortunately, masturbation during sleep has led me to revisit my old PMO habit and has led to a relapse. I will begin resetting my counter when I masturbate during sleep. Hopefully, that breaks the habit.
