My K9 Password

    Hi guys,

    I had an idea. I set my password for K9 to "PIED-PIED-PIED" about a week ago.

    I had a pretty strong urge last night. I started to venture towards bypassing K9.

    As soon as I thought about my password.....it snapped me out of the urge :)

    Good idea man! I also try to set my passwords to discourage me to lapse!

    By the way .... I like your idea of not using vulgar language.

    She talks about this in the book the Willpower Instinct. Studies show that practising resisting on type of impulse helps you a resisting other types of urges. So watching out for vulgar language will help you get better at noticing an impending PMO urge

    It's about catching what your sub-conscious is about to do.

    What's a K9 password? I'm going to try the Willpower Instinct book mentioned; are there any other ones useful, do you know of any good youtube clips with positive affirmations?

    Why dont you get someone else to put the password there so you cant even change it?

    There are 3 options to do it differently:

    1. you can set up random free email service. Use it for K9. Then set some random set of characters on the device which you forget (remove) > so basically, you will not own the password.

    2. I use second app called selfcontrol.app which blocks for 24 hours access to defined list of sites. (I have my email in there)

    3. You can get an accounting partner and give the password to him/her.

    -------------

    But only you can decide:

    A. If you are strong enough to use self moderate yourself.

    or

    B. Or if you will trust others and give them your password.

    It's a balance..... we need to learn self moderation, or we will never put this this behind us.

    I personally am trying to improve the ability to catch and urge and stop it.

    Anyone can avoid PMO if their hands are tied, and they are locked in a dark room. You often see people here who go on a binge after the filter stops working for some reason.

    Urges are still too quick and strong for me to have unfettered access. So I am trying to strike a balance where there is a bit of a delay, so my prefrontal cortex can override my sub-conscious.

    It is sort of like a "Cue-Exposure-Therapy", where people have access to triggers, but learn not to follow them.

    i.e....I want to get good at having access, but not chasing triggers.
