My parents laugh at me. Literally

I am on day 33, hard mode, and it's being great. I can't focus all day, but everyday I study a little bit.

I am thinking recently, that I drink too much coffee and soda. And I'm overweight. The biggest villain is soda, I know, and chips. I can drink a litre of soda with chips in one go.

But I want to stop, be a better version of myself, and when I said this morning to my parents that I'll not drink soda anymore, both of them laughed.

I can't choose what I eat. I'm unemployed and live with them. I can only decide how much, and when. How will I lose weight like that?

Hi there, I can completely relate to what you're saying. Losing weight is not the easiest thing to do especially when those around you don't even take you serious. I think the first thing you should do is set yourself a simple and realistic goal such as only drink 1can of soda every 2 days but you can eat chips then start slowly reducing both to the point where you don't want either. Another thing you could do if you're really addicted to it is by putting on a sauce that you really hate each time you want chips... eventually you'll link the taste to the chips and not want the chips anymor. Another thing you could do is by not carrying money that way you can't even buy any snacks as such from outside

If you want to lose weight it all really just boils down to calories. Foods matter for health, for weight loss they matter very little. So just ate less calories. I used to us Myfitnesspal.com for that. It automatically calculates how much calories you need and it has huge database of foods with their calorie content that you can search for. Makes tracking rather easy. Or alternatively you can burn extra calories off with exercise to put yourself in deficit. You don't have to ate less in that case, you just have to exercise more. Waling, jogging cycling, etc.

Of course if you could pick particular types of food you could ate less calories while also feeling full. But since you can't your only choice is discipline (exercise more or eating less). Also drink a lot of water before meals. Makes you feel full so you don't ate as much. And ate slowly. That as well makes you feel more satiated when you finish and you will less likely overrate. When hungry start with a meal that is least calories and most volume, instead of the most delicious meal. Cos you can always snack later on when not so hungry but if you do so when hungry you will very likely overeat. So same the most delicious stuff for later once hunger is gone.

For me my attachment to soda was really an attachment to the feeling of a carbonated beverage. With that info, I switched from soda to carbonated water like La Croix. I know that brand is kind of pricey, so I would look for other options. Who knows, your parents might be in favor of that change.

NOOOO! Losing weight doesn't just boil down to eating fewer calories and all that other nonsense everyone has been told. If dieting worked, everyone would be skinny.

Your consumption of chips and soda has nothing to do with self control. Your body just needs energy - the energy to repair itself and be productive - and it isn't getting it from your diet properly so it has NO CHOICE but to take it the fast, easy way. if you took away the junk food by sheer self control and didn't replace those calories with something else, you would suffer. but probably your body would plague you with such intense cravings that you wouldn't suffer too long before giving in. that's your body protecting itself.

Feed your body enough (primarily carbohydrates) and make sure you are eating a large breakfast. I can't really write out a diet manual here and most people don't take advice anyway, all I can say is that I used to have major junk food cravings and I learned to listen to my body and it's not a problem anymore. Your body is not stupid! observe its patterns and learn from it and ignore bs starvation, "will power" diet theory.

I agree. Not from my own experience, but from my brother's who lost 20+kg in few months by keeping a strict diet and exercise plan. He exactly counted the calories he ate and also the ones he spent. Fat has about 700 kilocalories per 100 grams. Using this relation I did the math, and it turned out that his body fat loss corresponded almost perfectly with the total difference in calory intake and usage! I would never have thought it would work that well and accurately in a quantitative manner.

Losing weight in a healthy manner is a totally different story, of course. The rest is about discipline... just like NoFap :)

If you want long term results, calorie restriction and purely ignoring what your body is telling you (aka "willpower") will NOT work. yes people can lose weight quickly from dieting... But go look at them in a year or five. all the weight is back and then some. then they beat themselves up for lacking willpower. It's maddening!

For calories there is a deficit (which you need to lose weight), maintenance (which you need to maintain a certain weight), and then surplus (which you need to gain weight). Learning the relationship these play is key to losing weight and keeping it off. AnOther thing you should research is if you're insulin resistant. That can play a huge role in not being able to lose weight, especially if you're eating lots of carbs.

That's true, I didn't mean to deny that.

(As for my brother, he gained a lot of weight because of several physical and psychological problems. He had two surgeries and hypnosis therapy and it's more like he just got rid of what wasn't really him.)

Are you seriously telling me that there is nothing in your house but chips and soda?

Parents can be fucking douche bags.

Okay to answer your question, to start with it sounds like you are on to a few things already. Sugar, salt and fat makes things really addictive, and soda and chips cover all three. I recently discovered chili banana chips. Sounds kinda healthy right? Still fuckin addictive, I need to stay away from that shit.

Some basic nutrition and measuring everything would help, also timing. I mean protein right - don't just get salty stuff, if you're going to go there go for actual meal food, savory. Avoid sweets, as you know.

One simple trick might be to just wait a little while. Eat half of the portion you got in front of you, and then wait like at least 10 minutes. You may find you are satisfied enough at that time, instead of just going for the whole thing maybe a part of the second half or not at all. I know for me I can easily get into the mindset of finishing the whole thing from the beginning.

Drink a TON of water.

Try to sleep enough. I know working on reboot can be hard but at least give yourself the time.

Start with simple exercise, walking. If you don't feel like walking a long time, go 5 minutes, commit to that and then give yourself the permission to continue or not. Any physical training in the beginning is about frequency, so if you can't walk 15 minutes walk 5 minutes three times a day or something. Gradually work your way up, so that means you gotta keep track, measure and increase little by little.

So it's basic stuff, but like the exercise I think breaking it down goes a long way.
