Same here. I had a sudden realisation a couple of years ago that I was not enjoying the lifestyle I had been conditioned to believe should be so enjoyable. I didn't know about Straight Edge at the time, but when I did discover it I was amazed and inspired that there was a group of people who had taken such a principled stand against what I had come to see as massively destructive social norms.

Straight Edge has a bad rep with some people for all sorts of reasons:

• There are those who adopt it as a quasi-religious cult, using it to deal with their insecurities and acting aggressively to non-edge people.
• It has been shamelesslesly exploited for commercial self interest by some performance artists (thinking mainly of wrestlers here)
• Mainly in Russia the concept has been hijacked by far right extremists as a kind of violent purity cult.
• There is a problem with 14 year olds pontificating about Straight Edge on the Internet when they often don't have the life experience to understand what they are saying.

But at heart it is just about self-discipline and making conscious, ethical choices about how you live your life.

Straight Edge isn't something I talk about in public because it isn't anybody else's business. I don't have Xs tattooed all over me. The most obvious it gets is when I wear a tshirt that is identifiably edge, but sXe has never really been a thing where I live so hardly anyone would know. In any case, it's not a badge of honour. It's more a way to help me feel like I'm not alone and not crazy in standing up to the huge social and commercial pressure on me to conform to something I don't want.

I don't accept for myself the societal norm that sexual pleasure should be on tap whenever, like some kind of cheap lager. I don't accept the mainstream Hollywood/TV/porn version of what adult relationships should be like. For that reason, nofap was a natural next step for me once I identified as Straight Edge. For many people, Straight Edge has a specific 'no f-ck' component. This is not an outright rejection of sex but a rejection of meaningless, animalistic sex. I would say PMO fits that description pretty well.

My username signifies all of this, while also containing a bad joke about me being a former edger.
