Physical effects on male of abstinence - the scientific view

Can anyone point me to the science behind this? There seem to be two schools of thought:
  1. The longer a man goes without ejaculating, the more there is an internal build up (of something??) resulting in increased desire that needs to find an outlet.
  2. There is no such thing for a man as a physical need to have sex. Sexual desire is only the response to external stimulus and that will be the same whether it is 7 days, 7 weeks or 7 months since his last orgasm.
To be clear, I am not interested in the fluctuations in the hours after orgasm. It is the longer term situation that I want to understand.

The physical need would be the biological necessity of reproduction, so the need is really there. Our sexual drive is what drives us to reproduce, its unnatural to fight that. The long term goal of not masturbating and watching porn is to achieve Glory. Glory through greater confidence and energy which help us achieve our goals and find better mates as we take care of ourselves. I hope that answers your question and I hope that I understand what you are asking. Don't forget, there is nothing wrong with having sex with a worthy and loyal partner. Orgasms from actual real life intercourse are good and beneficial. Its the fake and self stimulated orgasms that fail to pair reward with stimulation leaving an emotional and physical vacuum.

Hi SOTG and thanks for the reply.

I understand that from a Darwinian perspective, both sexes must have an urge for sex in order for the species to persist, but what I am looking for is the science about how that sex drive works. Go without water and you get thirsty, go without food you get hungry, but that may not be how the (male) sex drive works. If you put a man in a cave with no sexual stimulus does he get ever hornier as each day passes until he is motivated to bust out of the cave and find himself a mate? OR is he actually quite content until a breeding age receptive female wanders into the cave and triggers his sexual response and he jumps on her. Either mechanism could work from a Darwinian perspective, but which is actually how we work according to scientific research?

I see what you mean now. The only way I could answer that is from personal experience. My time in the Army showed me that men's sexual drives certainly suffer (as in sky rocket beyond normal levels) in the absence of women. We know this to be true with all military conquests when men are often put in environments with no sexual stimuli at all, in men only environments only to rape and pillage their way through when finally making contact with females (or, equally as bad, raping their male comrades). My worst times with porn and masturbation were in the field with nothing but high stress situations an no sexual stimuli. It builds up until you either do it your self or find a woman to satisfy the urge. From a logical point of view, this attribute would serve great purpose in a human society where men way outnumber women and are driven to go elsewhere to mate. Also works in situations where a male human may (for whatever reason) become isolated and find his way the best he can back to civilization to "answer the call".

If you want a study from an accredited scientific institution I'm afraid that I wont be able to help you there at this moment. lol I'm up way past my bed time so I can look later when I get up if you haven't found your answer.
