Porn and neuroplasticity, why it's so good for you to stop.

Have you ever stopped to wonder why it’s so hard to get out of this porn addiction? We start watching pornography very early, in a very critical period for our brain, when we are developing and creating brain connections that in the future will be marked in our identity.

I’m reading a book called "The Brain That Changes Itself". The book itself is not about addictions, but how brain plasticity exists and affects our life, and one great meaning of this is that our brain is constantly changing, and that it is possible to change himself in our adulthood. When we’re young and we don’t have sexual experiences, we start watching pornography, it’s shaped in our brain like it would be a real sexual experience, because it’s the only exposure we have about sex.

The fact is that it causes a huge problem in our sex map in our brain, as well as several posts here on this forum, many people telling their sexual experiences, and how they got frustrated realizing that it’s not the same thing as pornography. But it’s not their fault, our brain tends to repeat the same behavior that was created in our head about what sex should be like.

When we begin our sexual life, all those years of pornography are unmasked and problems begin to come, such as the PIED(porn induced erectile dysfunction), the difficulty in maintaining erection during sex. This is a dynamic phenomenon that perfectly illustrates the progress of an acquired taste, such as hardcore pornography, sadomasochistic themes of forced sex, ejaculation in the face of women and furious anal sex. Pornography influences young people, in the process of transforming their sexual preferences and desires. Adult pornography can also be profound, and those who use it do not know to what extent their brains will be reshaped by it.

Pornography viewers, they develop new brain maps, based on the photos and videos they see, and our brain obeys a principle called "use or lose," when we develop a map (habit), we look forward to keeping it activated. These images remain in our imagination, even when we are not seeing pornography, one of the main reasons for the relapse. Our brain has a competitive plasticity, the content and the categories we consume occupy a space in our brain, these exciting new images and videos begin to have more preferences, because they begin to occupy the very space of our old tastes, That could be one of the reasons partners start to lose interest in their girlfriends.

Why is it better to stop using pornography? When we use a substance that gives us great pleasure as masturbation, we release a protein called Delta-Fosb, and increasingly this protein accumulates in our neurons, activating a genetic switch, which establishes which genes are "turned on" or "turned off", this switch causes changes that persist long after the addiction is suspended and this causes damage to our dopaminergic system, impacting on our quality of life, how we feel pleasure and motivation in activities in general, causing depression, procrastination, etc.. In addition to causing problems in how we feel pleasure and motivation in things in general, it negatively affects our sexual experience and performance, imagine you going to have sex and not being able to maintain an erection, or even taking too long to ejaculate(too much time, that’s not good as you think). Most of the reasons you probably already know, and for those of you who don’t, read it very carefully and look into it, if you know how bad it is to keep this up, you’ll have more motivation to leave, whenever there’s a sexual desire in your head, try to remember the negative effects and how you will feel after that, and also try to imagine how good you will feel after a long time of abstinence, I’m sure you’ve experienced how good it is to stay several days without it, how motivated and happy you can feel without it, happy new year.

Excellent post and a great reminder of the vicious cycle of PMO.

A greatly detailed and insightful post @jaozinRAJADAO

Thanks for taking the time. I find my biggest struggle is to tap into these things that I do know in moments of weakness. Having that mindfulness to overrule what you know will be a stupid binge. I know i can get there, but need to invest more time reading once again and trying to follow that spiritual path.

Happy new year, and never give up trying. Worthwhile things can take time :-)

Thanks for taking the time to write your post. My first experience of “sex” was also through looking at porn. This situation continued for several years. I wonder how much it has affected me and others?
Best wishes for 2022 !

Well, this makes a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing this with us. Now I can understand that my brain has been molded to years of porn and to understanding sex in a certain way which does not compare to reality. So it's a long way until it gets rid of all those years. The road is long, but I'm willing to walk it whole.

Great post. Feels like a nearly impossible task having started PMO 20+ years ago before I had sex. How messed up is my brain… ( hint: very )

such a bummer

Exactly this, we don't know how to live normally anymore . We don't even remember what it is. Our minds are completely flooded with high stimulation we don't remember what normal is. Normal is less stimulating and because of that we've forgotten and taken on the new high stimulation from porn , even though it's turning people into disgusting degenerates . .

I want normal back . Normal was much better than THIS

When I relapse to porn now after a week it's nowhere near as stimulating and infact it makes me feel sick . Any wonder the shit we are exposing ourselves to. All sorts of just gross shit. But why do we do it . Boredom and conditioning ourselves overtime.

You need to be very clear with yourself that you are detaching yourself from it .

NORMAL where you at?

I think the hardest part is realising it is going to be more boring , but because we have abused the absolute shit out if it. But there is so much more to life but we aren't really living it .

People use porn as a panacea same way they use drugs and alcohol. To quit it really takes a massive leap forward in terms of outlook and mentality

But it's going to be boring until you can find a better meaning to keep it .

I used to eat clean train exercise and just generally much more active and optimistic when you live that kind of lifestyle and don't let haters or negativity drag you down . The only way is up . That's normal . Not busting a nut to 5 midgets and a pony . Something is very wrong

Thisssss.
I think this is why through my rebooting process I get flashes of porn related images and urges to ejaculate to those mental scenes. Thank you for helping me understand the neuroscience behind it, really helps.

Happy New Year to you as well.
