I've been back and forth on this a few times over the last year.

When I first go back to using porn filters, I initially feel a bit of a relief. Like it just got easier, like a risk has been eliminated.

The problem is, my brain tends to create huge urges whenever it sees an opportunity for another source of porn.

So I am not really "getting good" at being around triggers, or good at being around the potential to view porn.

A porn filter is like locking up a bad dog in a cage. It doesn't really train the dog the proper way to behave or respond.

In the Cue Exposure model of addiction treatment, the idea is to train new responses to triggers. The retraining is only possible if you practice being around triggers.

So.... I am going to be turning off some of my filters. And we'll see how it goes.

    Hi Feo,

I've gone through the same process, I know exactly how you feel! I think you're taking a good step, just be very careful.

I currently have one simple porn filter on Chrome on my Chromebook. I can get around it extremely easily, by borrowing my fiance's Macbook, or using my phone, or just entering the password (which is "DON'TFAP!!!"). I have to choose not to. But I keep it because I like the fact that the porn filter prompts me for a password whenever I come close to something that might trigger me. It's like having someone saying "Are you sure you want to look at that? REALLY??"
