Does anybody else after flooding your brain with dopamine and then orgasming feel a depressed state for hours or even 18-24 hours afterwards?

After I come down from orgasm high, I feel immediately depleted, low-energy, sad..... and ashamed that I can't control this habit/addiction. This feeling can last for maybe a 1-2 days, Then I feel "normalish" again. (Obviously just to repeat the cycle again...)

    Is this just me?

I used to get that when I would use pornography and other selfish sexual behaviors. Big time. A lot of times to "get relief" I would use some selfish sexual behavior to "feel better" then feel worse, etc. Didn't realize that for years until dinner sex addicts taught me. I couldn't see my self at all much less clearly, but when I was broken I found wise people with a happy way of life that let them be nice to people and also not have to use like I was using.
One of them taught me that "relapse is always preceded by emotional binging.". I still often feel emotional hangovers and they make my sobriety less happy. There a step in between to work with emotions and if I don't practice that excessive emotions and poor relationship to them will lead to acting out. Just today I noticed an out of control emotion that wasn't being let go of that I realized could easily make me want to act out.

its not just you, i had felt the same. actually, when i started doing nofap consciously, i would observe that after a 7+ streak, when i relapsed, my brain would feel like mush and my emotions would be all over the place for the next three days at least. in severe instances it was comparable to hangover from mdma after you were rolling. i remember one time i had a very long streak, 30+ or something, and when i viewed p then i literally fealt physical waves of dopamine/serotonine hitting me, just like from substances.. once you have managed some self control and abstained a bit, you will start to realize in how big a cloud you have lived, and what clarity is actually possible. wish you all the best

  5. I would love to see more research on this topic because a lot of people seem to experience the same thing. Is it psychological or physiological? Is this similar to a hangover, or maybe substance withdrawal? Or maybe your own personal self-thoughts about PMO contribute to this depressive state. Does the PMO itself cause the depression and low energy, or do the shame and guilt following a relapse cause these symptoms?

I don't really have any answers, but what seems clear is that you should continue with NoFap to avoid these negative consequences.

Try to accept your past decisions to relapse, and know that it is okay to make mistakes. Quitting masturbation/porn is one of the hardest things anyone has ever done, and most people don't even try. So give yourself some credit, please.

I hope you feel better. We are both on day 1 it seems, so here's to a long and productive streak!

I get anxiety and nervous around people after a relapse. It doesn't matter if I have a 3 months streak or a 3 day streak samething always happens. Is getting worse the older I get. Staying clean does feel better but the urges don't go away or sometimes I relapse just to feel better. But the next few days I feel worse.

    Yes!

I have noticed this too. I'll be on a 10-14+ day streak and be feeling very energized and confident, looking people in the eyes and feeling good/witty about life. Then I'll relapse and the next day just feel so low/weird that I can't look people in the eyes.

I feel like it is a physical drug sometimes, my brain feels "lit up" like I took some MDA or Cocaine from all the dopamine and after orgasm I crash for about a day. Feel somewhat emotional too so I keep binging on PMO and get into this nasty cycle. It's been very hard to break so I have since just relapsed.

I really hope being on this forum can help keep me accountable and it's good to hear from all you guys. Thanks for the replies!

I relapse after 7 days. I felt lethargic, zero confidence. When im on a good streak without relapse. I feel so much better. I think I been using pmo to help deal with anger issues but pmo is not really helping. All it really does is deplete all my energy but im still carrying this anger. Is just for a moment that the anger goes away. I gotta learn how to deal with my rage in a healthier way.

I personally feel the same after a relapse. After 1-2 days I start feeling better only to relapse again because of urges. This makes living life really horrible.
But we shall never give up!

WOW! This has to be one of the most interesting articles I've ever read. So full of relevant information!

"The researchers surmise that this “hangover” of plastic changes may be a protective measure against overstimulation of the brain’s reward circuit:"

Overstimulation is overstimulation, and both sex and drugs can hammer the reward circuitry. Among the resulting plastic changes scientists have already measured in the brains of sexually exhausted rats are:

    • reduced androgen receptors
    • higher estrogen receptors
    • increases in opioids that dampen libido.
In addition, whereas a rat with a full tank will respond to electrical stimulation of the reward circuitry with sexual behavior, a sexually satiated rat does not. His brain’s pleasure response is numbed."

But rats don't have access to the constant novel females (ie The Internet), so humans can hack this satiated brain mechanism by finding many novel females on the internet. Every time I relapse, it's me hacking my brain to "feel good/get high" off porn when otherwise I would/should be feeling satiated and recovering.

"Masturbated 5 times today and all the old depressive feelings came back. I could clearly see that the depression was NOT because I felt bad about relapsing, because I didn’t. It was all about my brain. It got depressed, paranoid and very anxious 30 minutes after my binge. I finally understand it now, not just in the abstract, but as a matter of experience. I recognized the feelings that often made me depressed and socially awkward. My solution was all the time the problem. I never suspected binging had this BIG an impact on my whole life."

n some men, today’s sexual novelty-on-tap seems to activate that old mammalian program that rouses a male’s appetite for new mates no matter how thoroughly he has satiated himself sexually. Would these men have a different sexual rhythm if Internet porn were not an option? Perhaps a rhythm controlled by evolved brain mechanisms—with time-outs after their sexual duty is done?

Literally after every single relapse I can remember. Exactly word to word what you described.
