It's funny... you know the Lord of the Rings is set in a medieval setting with Middle Ages technology... but during the real Middle Ages in Europe there were no potatos or pipe tobacco either... because those crops came from the Americas and Columbus hadn't sailed yet.

 

Interesting mystery surrounding sweet potatoes: they are native to the Americas... and yet the plant was already widespread in Polynesia and India before Columbus sailed in 1492 and issued in the exchange of food crops from all over the world known as the Columbian exchange. So, how did they get from the Carribean to Hawaii and India? Nobody knows.
