Anyone else struggle with overeating? I am really taking NoFap seriously and am doing well, but I am continuously overeating. I've always been an emotional eater and really want to get this under control because now this is making me feel miserable. I know there is no easy method, but I am curious to see what others have tried.

  2. all you can do is learn discipline, going on a meal plan or portion plan would be a good start. You need to find a healthy way to channel emotions, try art or music.

You have my empathy. I used to be one, too. In fact, I was diagnosed with Binge Eating Disorder in 2006. But it had plagued me for many years from my teens onwards. It was dreadful and caused me humiliating guilt and shame. Like masturbation (and much later, porn), it was done in secret. But I had the additional psychological pain of becoming more and more obese until I passed the threshold of Super Morbid Obesity! I say all this to assure you my empathy is sincere.
I have no doubt this first suggestion is said with good intentions and in good faith. But trying to discipline yourself, following a meal plan or portion plan would make things worse. People with Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder or simply compulsive overeaters have a history of restrictive diets. This exacerbates the pathology of these conditions. Sorry littlekegger. However, your second sentence contains the golden nugget. :) "You need to find a healthy way to channel emotions, try art or music." We have used food much like we have used masturbation (and porn), namely, to avoid facing painful emotions. So, the route out of these behaviours is to deal with our feelings as they arise. Do not force them down inside, under several helpings of junk food or desert.

Strange as it may sound, something artistic, such as crafts or playing a musical instrument allows us to process our emotions in a manageable way. My personal saviour was collecting books of line art for adults (mostly depicting animals) and colouring them in. My preferred medium was colouring pencils. I found it immensely therapeutic. Prior to this, emotions would well up quickly within and I would use food to suppress them (masturbation, too). Having a creative outlet meant that I could experience the emotions in a much less frantic way. Literally, everything was slowed down and I felt like I could deal with what came up and relatively calmly face each feeling and sensation. Try it buddy.

I overeat everyday, but I try to eat with no really salt and I avoid sugary sweets, I don't eat junk food and if I cook chicken, then only in oven to cook it without really much fats. I don't drink sodas, but I put also in my mind training and I set goals, as if I eat a lot then I need to lose weight by training, but I be also kept busy by studies and other things, so it isn't too crazy when it comes to eating.

So I think it's just to switch to healthier food habbits, involve in exercises and as before it was said artistic hobby, these should be the goals.

It's not really an issue of quantity of food. Research the calorie myth, or CraP - calorie restriction as primary. It's antiquated.

Binge eating is a dysfunction in hormones - notably leptin. It's a bit complex to go into now. But eat foods that bring about satiety. Fat is actually good for you if it's a natural fat we evolved with (olive oil, coconut oil, butter) are all ok. So add it to your meals, and enjoy the satiety to get on with your day. They trigger leptin and leave you feeling full.

Sugar, and insulin spikes - block the leptin response. And sweetened drinks increase appetite as well, so avoid shit like diet cola. Sugar also triggers the dopamine response - hence it being addictive, and a go-to comfort food.

I completely disagree with suggestions of portion control. Just change what you're eating. Eat real food. Eat as much as you want, honestly. As long as it's healthy - or frankly just normal food not made in a factory - you'll get healthier. The dopamine, and leptin functions will normalize in time. And you'll find yourself unable to over-eat as much - and even if you do - it won't be very harmful.

The skinny on obestiy on youtube is a quick intro into this. I might post more topics on this later...but seriously - it's not an issue about volume of food. It's the type of food and how it affects your biochemistry. A lot like excessive masturbation affects...your biochemistry.

So...I'll add more to this: I have a degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Nutrition and I am also a certified personal trainer. I know what needs to be done from the perspective of dieting and exercise. I know a lot about dieting and exercise. I'm not saying that there isn't more to learn, but I have an extensive working knowledge of what needs to be done. However, when it comes to behavior modification and breaking the cycle, I am lacking. I'm loving the ideas on redirecting emotions or finding more positive outlets. I'm more interested in how individuals changed their mindset rather than what I put into my system.

I couldn't agree more!!! When I was training consistently with clients, I was eating so much food!!!

    Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the info and sharing your struggles!!!
