Trust me, I’ve fallen for this trap.
You’re faced with tremendous temptation to give in.
The urges are so strong they pull you away mentally from focusing.
You try your best to distract yourself by checking your phone or trying not to think about the urge, yet the advice to let it pass doesn’t seem to work.
2, even 3 hours pass and you’re still fighting. Congratulations. You’re playing a willpower battle against evolution.
But there is an alternative.
It is unfortunate modern technology has exploited something fundamental to our nature as humans.
It is true that sexual energy and urges for sex are natural, yet NoFap makes this challenging as we are often trying to fight something as fundamental as hunger.
It isn’t healthy to teach yourself to not feel hunger, but to change how you eat, what you eat, and how often.
The next time you feel an urge no matter how small, try thinking about how it is a natural emotion, nature running its program.
Then, decide to transmute this energy into:
- Something that requires using your focus
- Something that requires using your body physically
- Something that pushes you ie a challenge, not simply cleaning as this doesn’t challenge the mind or even the body.
You might find working out to be a less effective way to transmute than say, working out with a trainer who challenges you.
Here are some activities useful for acting as an outlet for natural sexual energy that aren’t simply distractions:
- Martial Arts
- Journaling (using the hand to write and intense for the brain)
- Exercise involving the mind (following a trainer/program)
- Design and idea drawing
- Yoga
- Any hands-on project (surprisingly computer-based projects have worked well)
- Meetings and calls (intense for the mind, walking during the call adds small physical effect)
As an extra, here are some failed activities I thought would work but didn’t, for me personally:
- Meditation (didn’t use the body enough)
- Walking (didn’t use the mind well enough, but will try more often)
- Gym workout (this can work, try for yourself. But don’t push to the point you have urges later and are too sore to act)
- Taking a nap (notice it doesn’t use the mind or body. This causes a setback for me)
Let me know if these help you out. The point here not to say you hit 180 days then experienced a setback.
It is for you to change your relationship with this natural energy, break away from PMO with ease, and change your life for the better.
It really comes down to replacing a habit that doesn’t serve you with habits that serve both you and your urges.
