The Divine Comedy 4/5 of Dante Alighieri
A lot of things happens on this book(good ones, sad ones), makes someone take a reflexion, it is an adventure.
Warning: There is a few of dialogues ,it's poetry i didn't know that and there is a lot of abstract concepts on it too.
There is no comedy and there is a mix of ideas on some parts.

Soldier of Cortanis by C.J. Weiland
This is the third of a trilogy, which starts as cyberpunk, almost LitRPG, transitions to thriller by the third book, and stays hard sci-fi throughout the series. Incredibly well researched. The pacing is a little slow in places, but delivers in other sections. What helps is to know everything about it, from the tech and applications to the violence, is plausible. Any victory the characters experience is well earned, and the series wraps up the loose ends.

Like, I know I am in some ways legally insane... but I feel like this thread is kind of objectively making a left turn into non-sequitur wonderland. I need some stability in my life. Could we rate some books?

  15. Lol ah, I gotcha.

And no, I'm not. lol it's from a TV show. It's actually kind of a silly moment, because the character is pretending to be an FBI agent, but he's nervous about lying, so he holds his badge upside down.

I picked this avatar because my username used to be the name of this character (in feminine form, since I'm a woman), and I liked that it reminded me not to take myself too seriously on here.

And then there's a fun call back to the joke a few seasons later :p

  16. I would if I could, but I haven't finished any in a while.

Still working my way through Awake by Natasha Preston and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, neither of which I'm particularly enjoying.

I'll be reading two books next month th, though, in prep for a romance writing class I'm teaching at a virtual conference. So I'll have to finish those quickly. Right now I've been writing far more than reading.

But I am planning to pick up a non-fiction book soon, maybe tomorrow morning, called "Faithfully Different: Regaining Biblical Clarity in a Secular Culture" by Natasha Crain. I've been excited for that one for a while, but I don't usually read much non-fiction, so it's taken me a while to get to it.

I just read "The Problem of Pain" by C.S. Lewis. It was okay. I honestly prefer more technical books.

My next book will be "The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Expressive Individualism, and the Sexual Revolution" by Carl R. Trueman. I think it will be a highly interesting read. It details how "[w]hile sex may be presented today as little more than a recreational activity, sexuality is presented as that which lies at the very heart of what it means to be an authentic person." It's thesis is that modern culture's obsession with sexual identity is rooted in a changed concept of the self. This concept of the self has been in development since Rousseau. I think I will enjoy it greatly.

Dear Writer, You Need to Quit by Becca Syme

I was at a conference, went to this productivity class because there was nothing better in that hour. She talked about tailoring a creative approach based on your own priorities and personality. After, I asked her about ADD and we had a nice conversation, she recommended I look into brain scans and she gave me a couple of her books she was trying to get rid of.

The first half of the book is more about lifestyle realignment than writing, and I was kind of unnerved with how easily it could have been about quitting porn. It’s not about silver bullets. It’s about tearing out bad habits, bad beliefs, and rebuilding with better ones. It’s about rewiring your brain, so you make better decisions subconsciously. It’s about hard work that most people claiming they want to do, won’t actually do.

With the writing stuff specifically, she says people have different creative processes so one author will have a lot of success doing one thing, and another will have to find their own way. She says you have to define your goals, which I already knew, you have to identify your values, which I already knew, and you might have to accept that you’re not the kind of author that can produce the volume that others do. Might. Or that maybe your life doesn’t allow you to be the kind of writer you want to be. Maybe. All this is stuff I have done and been making peace with for a long time, but it was nice to read that affirmation.

It’s the kind of tough love I’m into. 4/5, I’m keeping it around to re-read sections.

  19. Interesting. I did a video about a similar topic recently, in regards to "quitting" or changed courses and re-evaluating your goals. I'm actually teaching a class in a virtual conference pretty soon about a similar subject, defining success for yourself. Next month I'll be getting to work on that. For now, I'm in drafting-mode. 20k left to reach my goals by the end of July!

I think people look at a few big name authors and think, “I have cool ideas, I could do that.” They give it a shot and feel good about what they write, maybe receive some positive feedback from well-meaning friends or family. Then they start dreaming of book signings and Hollywood deals and interviewing with Terry Gross on NPR’s “Fresh Air” about the deep literary significance and delicate portrayal of humanity in their latest NYT bestseller. It takes just a little experience, if you’re paying attention, to realize a more realistic goal might be “get an agent.” Or maybe just “collect 30 rejections.” Or maybe just “finish the stupid manuscript.”
Me personally, my goal is to “get a one star review.” I kind of had to self publish, so my marketing reach is limited basically to my wife’s social network. If I get a negative review, that means someone far enough removed from a personal relationship with me or my wife or whoever personally recommended it not only read it, but felt strongly enough to talk about it.
My current writing goal is to finish the chapter. I was supposed to write a first day of Middle School yesterday, and I barely got my prot. off the bus. I’m so far out of depth right now.
