I just noticed a post in which someone referenced material from a specific religious organization. It seems to be focused on dealing with porn, but we know 1. NoFap is a secular organization, and 2. No religious org seem to have particularly effective strategies above and over other orgs, if that was the case I'd expect we'd see more mention of it. 12 Step talks about a higher power but doesn't define what that is for people, and likewise I'd imagine many people of faith would consider that the primary factor - in which case it isn't the system itself. In other words, to make it a matter of faith is to say it isn't about the method, otherwise your faith is in the method and not in what you'd consider a higher power. So I think this makes it pretty clear and distinct as two different things. I'd think a full disclosure would be good practice if someone is going to make a religion affiliated reference, whether that person is or is not affiliated with the organization. If they are it would be open and honest, as there is the slippery slope of preaching and advocating for ones faith, which we know is pretty common, and the person can make it known they don't have any other motive or agenda other than providing info that might help people to be free from PMO. (if that's actually the case) And if they are not affiliated with the org then it would be a testimonial to their methods so either way it seems to be a good thing to do.
I too, read the post that you reference and I too was offended that the links were provided without clearly communicating that these were to a specific religious sect. Your point on that is well made. I use Biblical scripture when the I am seeking to encourage someone who has identified themself as a Christian, but I reference the scripture as 'ancient knowledge'. In reference to your above quote, I believe that my faith (read - Higher Power) led me to NOFap, and that NoFap is consistent with the methods advocated in my faith system: James 5:16 New International Version (NIV) Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. Proverbs 15:22 New King James Version (NKJV) Without counsel, plans go awry, But in the multitude of counselors they are established. Thanks for your post. Be Strong My Friend.
I'm not religious far from.... some would say I'm against religion but the posting that I think you are taking about is utter garbage. People can do religion as much as they want in any way they want, but I would love to see some sort of explanation of what the link is about.
It was in one of the age group forums, and to be fair the guy didn't go on about his beliefs or anything and it was a part of a whole big list of things, with the other items not being related to that org but that particular item did kind of stand out because of a particular religious affiliation, so I figured it may be worth addressing, and of course I'm speaking generally of anything else if it should involve someone else and other organizations.
Sure, I'm just saying people should be open about it. People who are not religious wouldn't want to be preached to, but when someone just says up front okay I'm a Christian or whatever then people know where you're coming from. The post that prompted this was a very specific sect and links to their site was posted like anything else. My thought is full disclosure on that kind of stuff, let people know it's religious but if you genuinely think it can be helpful then of course it's something you'd want to share.
