Scared I will not last

Discussion in 'Off-topic Discussion' started by BravelyKegger, May 17, 2023.

  1. I have been abstaining for about a week now and I would say things are going well. Last night as I was lying in bed, I had an urge to look through my phone to see if I could find any pornographic photos I failed to delete; I previously suspended my phone service so I could not look anything up. What scares me is the fact I was so willing to throw everything away in that moment of temptation; I feel as if I am living on repeat, I do well and before I know it I let temptation overcome me. I thought to myself last night, "will I ever truly be free of this?"

A week is good. It’s also good that you set yourself up to avoid crumbling to impulse.

Your goal is to not want to PMO anymore, and you can get that by replacing whatever it is you need from PMO with a better source. One of the big ones is dopamine, that’s covered extensively here on the forum. We know PMO offers a lot of easy dopamine on demand. Replace that with regular exercise, and consciously commending yourself for time well spent. Your brain is plastic, meaning it can change. Eventually it will learn it can get dopamine through any other range if positive behaviors, and it won’t prompt you to look at porn. Just remember; treat an urge to look at porn as a reminder to do some pushups or something productive. If you’re supposed to be sleeping it’s more of a problem, but otherwise you can occupy your body and your mind with something useful.

There’s no hard time limit for this, but the goal is usually 90 days and it’s a good one. I think your normal porn addiction can be more or less cleared up by then. If you still have trouble after, your an advanced case with deeper psychological dependency, welcome to the club.

  3. You are correct, friend. I need to find suitable replacements that are both effective, and require some amount of work to achieve; I used to know this but seem to have forgotten so much.

It's ok. I've been doing this for years, I've had extensive streaks, I still forget stuff all the time. It sucks because you can be doing everything that you know of correctly, and you still slip up. Then you think, "maybe that stuff isn't so important, maybe I can change it up," but nope. You know what works and what doesn't. It's just frustrating that it's not foolproof.

  5. There true, when you find the formula you must stick with it. Otherwise you'll end up doing things not as efficiently.
