Should I quit marijuana?

Discussion in 'Self Improvement' started by Foxhole, Apr 24, 2018.

  1. My teenage years could easily be described as prolonged marijuana induced psychosis (its a thing, look it up) and I still find it difficult to abstain sometimes. I started going to marijuana anonymous a few years back and while I don't go anymore I did find it helpful, mostly because I made a few friends that I still see. The steps are a waste of time in my view, its hanging out with people that know what you are going though that makes the difference.

If you want to smoke, smoke. If you want to quit, quit. If it ain't that simple then you've got a problem. PM me if you want to dig into the details.

I know your dilemma. I often think about the dangers of marijuana and whether I should stop smoking it. If you feel that marijuana interferes with you, makes you weak and dependent, then quit. You don't have to smoke marijuana, there are various CBD oils for e-cigarettes with marijuana extract. If you feel good, just put these thoughts out of your head. As for me, I have been smoking marijuana for several years and I feel good. I just stick to the dosage, don't get carried away, the recipe is simple. The weed works well for me, it relaxes me, and I can fall asleep in peace. That's basically what I smoke it for.

Point 2) is very alarming to me and sounds like a good reason to quit entirely.

Weed in abstraction is fairly easy to defend. A have a friend who wasn't smoking but was always like "cigarettes are way more harmful than weed, why shuld weed be illegal" and was always for legality of it. Until he knew some potheads in person, then he became very much anti weed. It happened because many of them clearly weren't normally functuoning well adjusted people and weed was often central to toxic escapistic lifestyle. There is some correlation between using weed, especially often, and generally speaking bad life choices. And this is probably a sign or a consequence of them, rather than a reason. This only a correlation, not a causation that I can proof, so weed can be easily defended, when nothing bad is happening in your life, but it is (like drug use in general) a ticking bomb reasy to explode at a moment of weakness, pretty much like porn. Many people, inuding myself, were having porn habits that were fairly managable, but they escalated when something bad happened in our lives, when we were depressed etc. So really the question isn't can you control your habits now? but would you be able to control yout habits in time of crisis and I think few people can confidently answear yes.

As mentioned above, marijuana is something abstract and it is quite possible to live happy without it, which is why I would recommend that you leave it

I would if I you were you. Problematic porn and weed use seems to come from a part that says "i want things my way, right now" rather than a place of discipline. Whatever I thought I was gaining from it was a delusion. It's much better to just be bored and mundane until morning comes when I can do something interesting. I have frequently quit both weed and porn, and keep going back to them. This year I was free form both for months at a time, and then relapsed into both in the fall. I am free from both again (have been off weed for about a week and a half) and things are much more stable and better for me, even if I don't always enjoy it. Everytime I quit these habits I'm reminded of how much better life is without them.

Congratulations @Foxhole on sobriety. It is a difficult obstacle to master for many, which is why we are all here.

After reading your original post, and noticing it’s been two years. I wanted to say that your answer is in your original post, many times. It’s funny when people ask questions on the internet, since we (readers) are usually detached from your situation, we can see someone’s answer because they state it in their questions.

Notice this the next time you read posts on the internet, it’s insightful. Introspection is paramount in growth. Keep going strong. Cannabis was a hinderance for me, personally.

  9. Marijuana is healthier than popping pills and drinking. But if you want to be sober and healthy, quitting marijuana is a great decision.

  11. Yes because it stimulates dopamine, even though it's more like psychadelic, rather than orgasmic.

    Dopamine destroys the brain.

I'm trying to quit smoking and it leaves an effect that I'm holding a cigarette in my hand when I'm not.

  13. Just to point out what should be obvious: The etymology of 'dopamine' is the same as the etymology of 'dope', meaning both weed, someone who smokes too much weed, and somebody who isn't mentally with it. The people who create these terms know what they're doing and have a sense of humour. In the same way that 'dentine' - the outer layer of the tooth - translates as 'tooth-stuff', and has the same root (pun intended :p ) as the word 'dental'.

The takeaway is that pleasure for pleasure's sake rots the brain!

Yes - regular marijuana use is bad for you

why? - it reduces your sleep quality and the amount of REM sleep you get.

Therefore reduces your testosterone levels - muscle mass, focus, confidence, libido is all reduced.

I have used marijuana occassionally as a sleep aid, but mostly oral. Outside of that, I think it's a pretty horrible drug, and I have watched it turn many otherwise interesting people into total stoned slobs. Really, it's worse than porn sometimes for people. I have a whole group of friends I actively avoid because all they do is smoke and play videogames.

I'm glad it never hooked me. But I have had periods of heavy drinking, which I'm sure I'm paying for in one way or another.
