Hello, I don't start threads often, but I want to start a discussion on sleep. How the heck do you know you're getting enough of it? And how do you fix THAT series of habits? (much less the habits that lead to PMO)

Let me start with a little background. It used to be hard to admit, but I've been addicted to porn for many years. Probably 15 years if not more. Anyway! I have recently left the 1-3 day streak cycle and I am now hitting 8-12 day streaks with no PMO which is amazing. I'm glad. It will only improve from here. I'm also seeing small benefits in other areas of my life which is encouraging too.

With that said, this slight improvement has given me the mental room to look for other bad habits that I want to get rid of also. However, I know the key is to not think of things in a solely negative way, but in a positive one too. Perhaps I should phrase it like this instead: "I want to encourage good habits in my life".

So, as far as sleep goes; I am a night owl. I have been for a long time. I feel wide awake at night, but I feel groggy all the way until about noon most mornings. Surely this can't be normal! Further, if this is similar to men being oblivious about porn use, if low sleep IS normal then I don't want to be normal anymore haha. I know it sounds bad, but I probably sleep anywhere from 4-6hrs of sleep each night. I occassionally sleep more, but that is usually on the weekends where I binge sleep and get caught up haha. I know this is terrible and I could be doing so many more positive things with my weekend than that.

Its 11:30pm, monday night, and I don't feel like sleeping, but I will try to right now. I can still get about 7 good hours of sleep if I try now. Sleep is what I'll do. Thanks for reading and let me know your thoughts.

First of all, each of us is unique and some principles can't be applied to all of us, there are many factors that affect our sleep (e.g. food, excercise, what we do just before we go to sleep) but research that has been done in this field helps us to better understand what might work for us and what are the main guidelines we should follow. Understanding the "science and chemistry" (e.g. sleep stages) should also help to better plan our moves. As an example you can take a look at this article, some useful hints can be found here:
    https://www.healthline.com/health/sleep/sleep-calculator#sleep-tips

I usually try to get at least 7 hours of sleep (7.5 is perfect) as my goal is to complete 5 sleep cycles. The fact that my days are repetitive helps here, as I work Monday-Friday from 8 am to 4 pm and I usually go to sleep around midnight (remote work is a blessing as I don't waste time to get to and from company building), this allows me to have consistency and even in weekends I naturally wake up around 8 am without alarm. I remember that when I had shift work in my previous department (operating 24/7), the irregular work time which changed week after week made it impossible to synchronize the time I got to bed, my body and brain was in disarray and I was contantly tired (one day off after shifts in certain time frame wasn't enough to bring balance and switch my body to different hours in which I will be most active).

So my advice would be to try to bring some regularity if it's possible, our bodies will get accustomed to our daily cycle and overall it should improve the quality of our life.

I tried my best to get more sleep during the week! Now its Thanksgiving and so I just went out to eat with a friend. Now I will go to sleep at right about midnight. I know that any later gets into the danger zone.

I will improve in this area!! I already noticed that on longer streaks it is easier to wake up.

I agree with @Deddog : regularity is the key.
I use to go in bed at 10 PM, without phone or tv, just a book to read if I will. Around 11 PM I start to sleep.

I track my sleep for 8 months, every day: before using noone tools (I approximated my sleep duration), since 3 months I use a simply smartband to track my sleep. It works very well, good accuracy and It helps me to understand how much I sleep.
I build a regularity scheme, I assure you that it is the key.
In my opinion brain fog is caused by a lack of sleep not just masturbation; this last thing affects your sleep because masturbating a lot means that you have to sleep more... You don't sleep more and you'll have brain fog.
So brain fog is caused mostly by lack of sleep.

Wow! I bet you're right. I slept probably 9 hours since I didn't have work today and I feel good. But it was not exactly regular sleep.

It was about 12:30-9:30am. On a normal day I would get up for work about 6:30am or so, so I will push for more regularity. It might feel weird at first! But I will try. Does anyone drink coffee in the mornings? I try to stay away from it, but occassionally I drink green tea.

Drinking a cup of green tea is a great way to start your day, green tea is a great (and better imho) substitute for coffee. I wanted to try matcha (Japanese green tea) for some time, I heard many good things about it :)

As for now I try to drink at least a glass of water after I wake up before doing anything else (breakfast, washing my teeth). Japanese water therapy (https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/japanese-water-therapy) recommends to start your day in a similar way - but I haven't tried yet to follow all the clues througly and to apply this therapy comprehensively in my life.

Very cool. I hadn't heard about that, but I agree green tea is better than coffee. Sometime I have those cold coffee frappe's, but I try to drink the tea more often. It has antioxidants which is halthy for you too.

I try not to be too obsessed with health, just to live my life. But I am excited that not fapping, sleeping better, and possibly just drinking more water can drastically improve my health! Thanks! Tonight I'll try to go to sleep at 10? ... I'll try. Even though I'm on vacation until monday lol. That sounds so early, but we'll see.

I have always had low blood pressure (good), but its starting to creep up since I was smoking cigs (quit that though after probably 3 months, bc it was dumb). The Japanese water therapy says it can help BP, so I may adopt water drinking in the mornings too!

I want to put a water purification system in under my sink. I think that would be amazing.

green tea and coffee conteins more or less the same quantity of caffeine. So there is not a lot of difference.
I drink coffee in the morning, about 160-180 mg of caffeine (It is my estimation). I just drink it in the first part of morning (two coffees in the range from 7:00 am to 10:30 am).
