    Dear Fapstronauts, here is a list of the systems of the human body. These systems are what we have been masturbating to - in the form of the female body (for males, or male body for females) - over the course of our PMO addictions.

    1. Cardiovascular system.
    2. Digestive/excretory system.
    3. Endocrine system.
    4. Integumentary system (the skin).
    5. Lymphatic/immune system.
    6. Muscular/skeletal system.
    7. Nervous system.
    8. Renal/urinary system.
    9. Reproductive system.
    10. Respiratory system.

    I feel that having a scientific perspective on the systems of the human body can wake us up to the ridiculousness of masturbating to porn and can give us the necessary discrimination to stop and think about it in the future.

    I am also assuming your intention for this thread was a sort of exercise in aversion therapy, trying to show us what a human body is made of. To repulse one from lusting after the illusory form of another, to repel them from lusting at the flesh?

    I like this idea. Love isn't all about cherishing the physical form of another. When we are masturbating to our bodies of preference what we are doing more often than not is expressing pure physical lust for the body.

    I'm glad you came along, @RenewedVirtue, and I see the quote in your signature is from Sivananda's Practice of Brahmacharya. A certain technique from this very book, in fact, was what inspired me to create this thread: the meditation on the component parts of the body of the opposite sex (to which we are normally drawn with great lust). I guess you could call it aversion therapy; an Indian Yogi might say that it is intended to awaken Vairagya, i.e. dispassion for or renunciation of objects of desire. I understand that Buddhists sometimes meditate on a human skull to fix in their mind the impermanence of fleshly things... another effective technique!

    SnL and Lumberjack-off-Man did not seem to understand that this was what I was getting at. Then you came along to clarify things, so thankyou.

    This thread is directly relevant to our NoFap programs! Any more objections? :p

    It is so relevant I think it scares and misleads people.

    I will admit contemplating the insides of the body can quell lust, but personally I do not practice it regularly.

    Perhaps now is a good time to start. I will remember this thread to discuss any content I study or have anything to add again.

    I used to fix in my mind the image of a skeleton first, and then superimpose on that the image of the cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels), then the muscles, then the lungs, then the digestive organs, et cetera with all the body systems. Sound painful? Or does it seem kind of futile? Try it when you're on the street around women. The more will-power you put into it, the more it will snap you out of your lusty daydreams and fantasies. I can't say I do this any more, but it would help to start doing it again to develop that sense of dispassion that is so helpful on the spiritual path.

    I guess the grand aim of this (and countless other spiritual disciplines) is to kill lust. One of the Silas (Ethical Rules) of Buddhism is not to engage in sexual intercourse, and that Sila can be refined to include impure looks or thoughts. No doubt there are various techniques involving skulls, corpses etc., but as I said, mine was inspired by the Yogi Sivananda and pertains to anatomy of the human body.

    A human being is more than that which constitutes their physical body. Those are the necessary support systems to create a living being, but a living being is more than just the support systems. Who/what are WE really? We aren't the body, that is the physical vessel we are attached to in this world. We aren't the mind, which functions the same as a computer does to control and make sense of the physical systems in place. We are the soul, which resides in the human being but is separate from mind and body.

    Also for some reason I can't resist doing this, I make comparisons between biotic and abiotic things all the time.

    I do wonder if there's an appropriate analogy for this too. If the body is like a motor vehicle, as you have stated, what is the soul to that mechanism?

    Am I right in asserting that Buddhists do not believe in an eternal soul (Atman) that transmigrates from body to body - that it is just the mind and its aggregates that do so? I feel like I'm out of my depth here... since the soul as we wish to believe in it is invisible and intangible, it is difficult for me to say anything definite about it without having stumbled upon some kind of transcendental knowledge of the matter. (And I haven't, as yet!)

    However, I stand by my case that an understanding of the body's systems can kind of "shock" the lustful mind out of its habitual reveries and fascination with pornographic media.     First off, me drawing comparisons between human body and motor vehicles isn't really meant to be philosophical or have a deeper meaning. It's just something I do for fun in my mind. There could be value and insight to be gained by making these comparisons, but don't read too much into it.

    Second, excellent question! Where does the soul reside?

    One of the biggest distinctions between a motor vehicle and a human body is that a human is alive, whereas the machine is not. What is the property that distinguishes living from dead? I would say that having a soul tied to/intermingled with the body is the distinguishing factor that separates the living from the non-living. So in direct response to your question, as the motor vehicle is a non-living thing there is no soul to it, so there is no soul to the mechanism. There is no soul to draw an analogy between, sticking with the above example. Consciousness is the soul, is the best answer I have atm.

    But let's discuss a little further. Consciousness and its fundamental nature interests me greatly. It is ever present in this world and we are aware of it, but know so little about it. Several years ago I had a 'Eureka' moment while in the shower; I quickly hopped out and wrote it down, then called my late best friend to discuss it with him. My basic idea runs something like this (it's still rough around the edges): Everything that exists within our universe cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed. This would indicate a closed system. Now it is theorized that at the moment just before the Big Bang, there was a singularity where all known forces, matter and energy -everything that exists in our universe- was at a single point in space time, compressed into an infinitely small point smaller than an atom. At this moment, the fundamental forces are indistinguishable from one another; essentially the same. This is important as everything in our current universe was contained in this singularity. We know that consciousness exists on our planet, therefore it exists in our universe. If it exists in our universe, it must have been contained in that singularity right before the Big Bang. Therefore, consciousness is a fundamental part of our universe the same way matter, gravity, electromagnetism etc are. So it would seem that life is some kind of interplay between time, energy, matter and consciousness.
