Admittedly, I haven't studied this process enough to fully explain it, so take from this what you will. But it is a very interesting process that can explain a lot about why we can get stuck in addiction, despite trying everything we can.

    It's called Homeostasis. http://www.biology-online.org/dictionary/Homeostasis

There's a video on youtube that explains this process much better than I do. This guy has many, many insightful videos, but this one is very interesting, and does a great job explaining this process:

If you have the time, please sift through these links. Awareness of this process might actually help you out in the long run!

Wow, I didn't expect some of these tips. Hey, thanks for sharing! I guess I have been trying to change too many things at once. Quitting a 14-year PMO addiction, going to church weekly, and eating my SIBO diet are already three difficult things, and I've been trying to add more. Most days I feel overwhelmed with just those three, but I think I can do those if I don't worry myself about trying to add more, for now. Well this gives me new confidence to just work on those, put my commitment into those, and focus on them until they become ingrained. I hope this helps.

    Thanks :)

Same here. I'm trying to quit porn, read more, pick up a meditation habit, stop drinking alcohol/soda, eat healthy, etc. Basically I'm trying to quit all my bad habits at once, and although it's a wise endeavor, it's very likely that doing all this at once will expend too much of my willpower. When I learned about the process of homeostasis, it was a bit of weight off my shoulders, like, "so it's not totally my fault that I can't seem to make a simple change". Your body literally tells you, in subtle ways, that this change is killing you because it's not how you've survived up to this point.

I'd very much recommend taking the time to watch the video, it's possible that it could change how you think of yourself if/when relapse occurs.

Very true. It is so tempting to try to change everything at once, particularly once you see how much better you could be. But like you say, if you overdo it your body will hate you for it.

So true. That weight off my shoulders is exactly what I feel, and I'm much more able to accomplish my main goals now.
