The counter system is flawed

  1. Personally, I would love to propose a change to the counter system. I think recording your progress via a "strikes per month" kind of method is much more healthy. Now obviously I know I can do that on my own, and I do, but I wish it was an option on the site, because a lot of people dont even think about it.

I deal with this "counter irritation" every time I "lose" a long streak. Because it's just not a good reflection of reality. I didnt "lose" all of that progress because of one minor mishap, and I'm not starting my whole journey back at zero. And I think its really unhealthy to view it that way.

Lots of people tell people that, especially the newbies, when they have a reset. They say "dont worry, you're not starting over at zero! All that progress still matters and you've grown a lot!" So if that's the case, why do we have counters that say the exact opposite of that? It just seems misleading and I think it causes people, again especially newbies, a lot more distress than necessary, and we need people to swoop in a reassure them that that's not how it works and you arent starting over and your progress still matters. It's like people need to do damage control for what the counter system is telling people, and couldn't that be fixed by just changing the counter system?
  2. You make good points. I use a separate counter app that is much more motivating in addition to the nofap one.
  3. I like the idea but I don't know how you could incorporate it into a counter. I've seen a spreadsheet offered here, which can help those who want to track progress on a monthly basis.
  4. What is the name of the other counter you use?
  5. Its called Quitzilla. I bought the premier to avoid ads and to unlock some nifty features. I like it. I also use it to count positive day intervals for other projects and stuff.
  6. I'm not sure either, but I wish the site itself offered an alternative, like a spreadsheet method. I think if the site itself offered that as an option, it would mean more and make more people think about the way they track their progress instead of just going with whatever the site offers, since that's what most new people would consider "nofap approved."
  7. Honestly for me it's more of a mindset thing. I picked a number to strive for (90 days), and I did my best to succeed. I watched porn briefly twice during that 90 days. I didn't reset my counter, I still believe I succeeded in my goal. Sure, I wish I didn't watch it at all, but I think starting from 0 would be much worse for my psychologically, because after a 'relapse', I get into this mindset that 'well I just did it now, so let's do it a few more times since Im back at day 0 anyway'.

Just pick a target and stick to it. Worry about improvement, not streaks or numbers. This is the longest I've ever done and I'm very proud of myself. I wouldn't diminish my progress just because I watched a bit of porn during my 90 day challenge.

    Just my two cents though
  8. I agree, but again, I'm not talking about myself. I'm talking about for new people who havent figured out yet how flawed of a system counting your days like that actually is. It would be nice to have other options.
  9. I think it's a good idea to be able to have a parallel counter of strikes per unit of time. But I wouldn't completely throw out the streak system because even though it's unforgiving and isn't always useful for assessing how the reboot is going, it's still very motivating.
  10. Yeah, to each his own of course. I think there should be another option, but I'm not saying they should get rid of the counter system. Personally, I only find the counter system motivating when I have a high streak. When I have to reset, it's a lot easier for me to feel like it doesnt matter if I PMO because my counters already at zero anyway. Which is not a good time to feel that way, because right after a reset is usually when you already feel extra tempted and not as motivated.

I know the counters we used to have here had that check-mark type tracking, but we didn't have the staff or expertise to maintain a 3rd party solution. We can take these suggestions and see if we can roll them into the current counter though. I personally would also like a return of the check-mark tracking.
