The Harms Of Edging

Discussion in 'Rebooting - Porn Addiction Recovery' started by Deleted Account, Feb 11, 2022.

  1. The following is a transcript from a video on a long gone channel that was called AlphaConceptsTV.

Edging is an Orgasm control technique which involves the maintenance of high levels of sexual arousal for an extended period of time without reaching orgasm. It has consistently been described as relatively safe or even beneficial in regards to ejaculatory control and mastery. And while edging indeed may hold some value as a tool to control the onset of ejaculation, it will absolutely destroy the practitioner’s brain, endocrine, and nervous systems proper functioning.

We’ll deal with the specific influence of edging on the brain / hormones / neurohormones / neurotransmitters in a minute but let’s first explain what it actually does to the stages of the human sexual response cycle.

    1. It prolongs the Plateau phase indefinitely. It is very harmful as our organisms are not build function in a state of sexual arousal for too long. With edging one is able continue with the activity basically indefinitely and to a state of complete exhaustion.

    2. It allows the practitioner to experience the orgasmic state numerous times in 1 session. This is particularly harmful, even more so than the prolonged Plateau phase.
Now, let’s take a look what is going on during those phases and how prolonging them affects our organism. In the Neurochemistry of Sex, Walter Last describes the relation between sexual activities and dopamine, prolactin, oxytocin, and phenylethylamine.

Dopamine levels are said to rise through the Plateu stage just to eventually get to a point of a dopamine brainstorm at the time of orgasm. The heightened dopamine levels have only a brief effect on our nervous system since the body downregulates the receptor count immediately, meaning that the higher the dopamine levels, the lower the active receptor count we’ll have. The effect is not immediately apparent, though, since the excessive dopamine levels have to be upregulated from the synaptic cleft, but when that happens we are left with normal to low dopamine levels and low receptor count, leading to severe withdrawal. As you can see, deficient dopamine levels and/or receptors will lead to addictions, depression, anhedonia, lack of ambition and drive, inability to love, low libido, erectile dysfunction, no remorse about personal behavior add/adhd, social anxiety disorder, antisocial behavior.

Of course, these are not to be blamed only on dopamine, the studies have just noticed a pattern where low dopamine has been shown to be connected to the symptoms described. Low dopamine usually goes hand in hand with numerous other neurochemical changes. Serotonin and Acetylcholine are also released during sexual activities and flood in high amounts during the orgasmic phase. They are in no way less important as we’re going to take a closer look right now.

Serotonin – it’s released during sexual activities as well, peaking at orgasm. Not only that, but Serotonin is actually needed to modulate sympathetic responses which are in their absolute height during the orgasmic phase, thus edging has the potential to easily overload the serotoninergic system. Let’s take a look at the binding profile of serotonin to properly gauge its importance. You can easily determine the crucial role of this neurotransmitter and imagine the consequences of its abuse during edging.

Acetylcholine – similarly to serotonin and dopamine, it is being extremely abused during edging. As you can see, it participates actively in the in the peripheral, autonomic, and central nervous systems, which are frequently overloaded during the ill practice. Acetylcholine is the only neurotransmitter used in the motor division of the somatic nervous system and is the principal neurotransmitter in all autonomic ganglia. It’s also involved in cardiac tissue neurotransmission and is present at neuromuscular junctions in skeletal muscle.

The general rule of course is, the more you flood your synaptic cleft with dopamine, serotonin, acetylcholine, and other neurotransmitters, the worse withdrawal you’re going to experience. Again, edging is particularly harmful as it may lead to dangerously low receptor count.

The channel, almost immediately after it was established, was banned on YouTube and then Vimeo shortly after.

Thanks for providing some science. Now what to do to rewire these circuits?

  3. You're welcome. From what I hear, some good ideas are offered up in The Brain That Changes Itself by Norman Doidge. I may just pick that book up.

I'm probably going to have some people come down on me like a ton of bricks for even mentioning this, but psychedelics like psilocybin and LSD are known to rewire the brain back to its default state and cure some mental disorders like addiction, depression, and PTSD. I've been doing NoFap for almost three years now, and I was still having frequent urges up to a few weeks ago. I was losing hope and thinking that my brain would never heal because I had been off porn for so long but still didn't feel like I was cured of my addiction. Then I tried psilocybin mushrooms for the first time a few weeks ago, and I noticed the next morning that my urges had reduced considerably. I have used them several times since that initial experience, and I find that I have less urges and feel happier each time I have a trip. I've been feeling emotions that I haven't felt in a long time, and I actually have faith that I could finally be my old self within a few months if I keep dosing once a week. I guess the only obstacle for most people on this forum is the legality factor. You can order psilocybin mushrooms online here in Canada, but I don't think that's possible in many other countries.

Here are a few research articles if anybody is interested in reading about the science behind this:

  5. Respectfully, I didn't make this thread to watch it turn into a discussion about another kind of drug. I'm not one to take the position of thinking or believing that more than a decade of destroying myself with PMO can be undone this way. If you are, fantastic. I must point out, though, that if you've been snacking differently for a "few weeks" and relapsed 8 days ago, I don't know how reduced those urges of yours actually are.

Also, I personally trust none of the sources you've linked to but to each his or her own.

In 10 years of PMO addiction ive only tried edging once and even at that time i didnt know what i was doing..i was 15-16 years old and i just wanted to prolong the O , to check my sexual stamina...it was something out of the world but it was so taxing and exhausting from a mental perspective ..it was fun but i never did it again, because after doing it for the first time i couldnt get rid of the rush for a very long time...it was simply an outoftheworld rush ..

  7. Can you imagine engaging in it for 10+ years? Probably not. And I'm happy for you if that's the case because it's a horrible feeling.

  8. Now YOU tell ME what's the difference between edging and non ejaculatory sex!

My last relapse wasn't to porn; however, I do still consider masturbation to be a bad habit even when it isn't accompanied by porn, which is why I reset my counter. Masturbation without porn is the lesser of two evils, but it's still an evil at the end of the day.

And if you have a more trustworthy source than an accredited academy like Yale, I'm all ears lol.

  11. Last night, I slept for maybe 4 hours. That's how bad my insomnia was. And the 4 hours were very interrupted and unpleasant.

I know, man. I'm trying. I am making progress but it's slow.

  12. The name does nothing for me. In fact, if anything, it tips me off to bullshit. I know the history of institutions like it and that's often enough for me. If anyone has doubts, they should look at their position on C-19 and sift through relevant research and studies. Most who have two braincells to rub together will probably get it at that point if they don't already.

Anyway, you do you. I'm not trying to convince you that what you're doing is wrong or that it'll be ineffective; rather, I just don't want the thread hijacked.

  13. I could't agree more. This is also a great way for people to carry on with a mentality that has them reactive rather than proactive with their health. You mentioned mostly everything I didn't have the patience to mention earlier in this thread. I think we're on the same page.

Regarding science (with a capital S for many people nowadays), it's not all it's made out to be. It's more a cult than anything imho.

  15. I can relate when it comes to career among other things. You should be proud of those 35 days. Keep going and don't give in.
