Co-writer and the singer of the song (Don Henley) said: “We were all middle class kids from the Midwest, Hotel California was our interpretation of the high life in L.A.” He added: “It's basically a song about the dark underbelly of the American dream and about excess in America, which is something we knew a lot about.” In other words, as the band have said, it is a commentary on the hedonism and self-indulgence of America.

So, theorising by others is irrelevant.

Well drug addiction in the mid 1970s was part of the hedonism and excess in America at the time. But it is not a song about drug addiction.

Someone can say Hotel California is about Fawlty Towers. Good luck to 'em, but it is irrelevant.

  7. Irrelevant to the facts of what the writers had in mind, sure.

Other perspectives are still relevant to those that hold them, they are relevant to others who might gain something from their persepective.
